I don't know of Cassidy's relationship with the players. I do know the team had 107 points last season. The winning stretch in the winter was more enjoyable than the beginning. The team did well despite the injuries and new teammates. Times change.
Montgomery came out of my limited understanding of coaching candidates. I look at his firing as the Dallas coach conceding he was contrite for alcoholism and the inhibitions it renders. Apparently Montgomery does have some ideas for assistant coaches. Kelly will be back in my opinion. I am not sure of Sacco given his supposed interest in the coaching position. I read of Scott Sandelin.
Certainly I would be interested on how Sweeney is going to help bolster the defensive corps if Montgomery is to change the Bs style of play. The offense must have Pasta back in the lineup for longer than one season. I believe if Sweeney can improve the team in the coming weeks the Bs will still be a top competitive team. One thing for Montgomery is attaining 107 points will be a marker. It certainly looks like a fail if he cannot get a 100 point season.
I did not want CJ to be fired. I did not want Cassidy to be fired. I am with NAS on this hire, boring. Winning solves a lot of problems. Also only one team wins the Stanley Cup, so playing well is important for the Bs teams in the coming years.
Sign Pasta, bring on the draft, and make trades worthy of helping Montgomery with his transition. The only doubt I have is Sweeney being able to do so.

By all accounts Montgomery was quickly becoming one of the more highly regarded coaches in the league until his alcohol addiction cost him the job. I'm intrigued by this and looking forward to see how he does, but I didnt see the coaching position as a problem with this team before when it comes to results on the ice. Roster needs some work before any coach can do anything.

We’ll see if “best in class” Donnie has pulled a rabbit out of the hat. Doubtful. But maybe Krejci joins Bergeron for another go and Freddy and Studs progress becomes secondary for a while.

This move is all about development of young forwards. Being more familiar himself as a fringe player forward, he will have the empathy and patience it takes to develop the confidence of our younger forwards. This was a weakness for Bruce whose domain was mobilization of D, puck movement, and being a prick. You don’t need a guy to come in a manage the personalities of the older forwards because you have the consummate leader in Bergeron to lead the way. We have had too many swings and misses on younger forwards and is a reason why we are faced with an abyss after PB and March age out. The young forwards (except Pasta) were restricted by Julien and shattered confidence wise by Bruce. I like this potential direction for this current team but patience will still be of essence.

Heinen had his best years as a Bruin; Kuraly played well as a Bruin and now Columbus. Studnicka was a flop last year so maybe that’s the big hope along with some of the guys with virtually no NHL experience yet who look good on paper.

You probably don't need to be. Like Montgomery, I was a normal social drinker and it got worse over time. 15 years ago, drinking was almost always fun. By 5 years ago, it almost never was. I got a lot of help, and needed it, to get where I am. I can't even get a buzz anymore...and you're right, I really don't need to drink, I just end up doing it out of habit I think. I meant that you probably don't need to worry about not drinking - not you don't need to drink. I'm not very preachy about it - most of the world drinks, and it doesn't ruin their life. If drinking is fun for you, I say enjoy it! I don't have a problem being around drinking, or talking about my favorite beers, scotches, etc. I wish it still was fun for me, but it's not. And the way alcoholism works, that's not going to change. It'd only get worse than it was when I quit if I started drinking again.

It's the friggin NHL. Coaches are going to favour those they believe in. Then enter a GM that loads up on 3 lines worth of tweeners, and they're all gonna do the same. Everybody knows, you don't coach veterans much outside the systems. I don't think there's a coach in the land, that wouldn'ta had it up to here with DeBrusk. Show me one player who took off when he got outta Boston. There aren't any, so all that's left is..."Well, Boston ruined them". Nope, sorry, this is the big time. Those that make it, kick others out of a job. Doesn't work backwards, unless something in the system is broken. Patience isn't a virtue, in the show either....brains are. We just picked up Forbort for a bag of pucks, and he's that mid 1st round pick, some here, have wet dreams over. Been pretty patient about Zboril haven't we? Will he ever morph into a player that demands 3 mil on the open market? Maybe some players got tired of Cassidy. Maybe some who wouldn't listen, got pissed off. Happens Move on. But the notion Bruce Cassidy stifled the Bruins shot at winning more.. cuz, he wouldn't give young players enough rope...in turn... screwing the teams futures.... has far too many holes.

Now this is a hell of a boring hire. I'm happy it's not the carousel coach routine. Let's see if this guy can get them playing the right way. Looking at the two teams that just played for the Cup, it's not like the B's are going to win it all anytime soon, but they can win some and that's always fun! I don't think so. I feel like this was slightly an out of the box hire to grab someone with possible upside that maybe wasn't getting chances elsewhere because of his problems. I've never liked that Dallas Stars roster and felt he overachieved with them a bit. I think Quinn would have been boring, and I was staunchly against him, because like OC was saying, he hasn't won a darn thing his whole career. And I would have felt worse with a re-tread like a Deboer or someone like that. So not sure this will work out, or if he will even get a roster that will allow him to succeed, but I am interested to see how it goes this coming season. They hired a dude with alcohol issues and bringing him into a city where everyone's always drunk... DS still might be thinking Bedard??

I dunno either… Julian’s system was not enough for Tyler Seguin who blossomed in Dallas. He would have been a great transitional piece at the Center position… after PB and DK…. but impatience and lack of foresight spoiled this one. DeBrusk demanded a trade because Bruce was playing head games with him making him eat popcorn on some nights. The guy was arguably one of the best forwards we had during the Playoffs this past year and has put up 20 plus goals without the benefit of first unit poweplay time. Yes, there have been a lot of 3rd line types to come through the door that has limited the sample size but there HAS been talent in the system that has not been maximized. It happens with all teams but it is has been a long time since we have been able to use our FULL SYSTEM to develop forwards into Top 6 players. This can be put on the coaching and the GM. Not sure why you mention Zboril, a defenseman, when I was strictly talking about forwards.

I think the Bruins could have done better. Montgomery has limited head coaching experience with Dallas and ended up in rehab. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but I'm not happy.
Have to say, coaching Segsy would drive me to drink.

You don't build a team around a Seguin, or a Hall. Time has proved that. 10 mil per, for 24 goals accompanied by a minus 21 shouldn't have anyone pining for Seguin. Another frequent coaches doghouse resident. I mentioned Zboril, simply because he's a kid that's been held onto, and developed forever. We could include Frederick too. I don't think most coaches pick on forwards any more than D. As far as Debrusk...I don't think many would argue we was becoming a floater, developing some really bad habits, which resulted in his game going seriously south. You call it head games, I call it a come to Jesus. I think Jake would be well served(and maybe he already has been) to shut up, take the pointed, yet very much deserved criticism, and grow from it. I certainly haven't made my mind up about Jake yet. I do think he can score some goals, but like Seguin, I'm not sure his overall net worth is anywhere near where it should be, but I'm sure of this. The Bruins, and Cassidy has to be included, handled this whole Root Beer Float deal....perfectly so far.

Ditto -- If the above Tweet reflects the criteria for this hiring -- I'm skeptical. Please prove me wrong. I'll be lighting a candle in the chapel this Sunday. If the Dallas gang pushed him to rehab -- who knows with this crew. Yeah, this is a tough one to judge on the front end. He can definitely coach. He seems to have that not-so-common ability to be a demanding coach who holds players accountable while at the same time being generally liked and respected by his players. He seems to have always exceeded expectations in his coaching career, on the ice. The drinking is a concern. There's no two ways about that. I have so much respect for recovering addicts and certainly believe in second chances, but am also a little worried about the fragility of it all. He's coming into a tough situation, in my opinion. A team that seems to be on the decline with some troubling weaknesses on the roster, a weak prospect system compared to others in the division, no 1st round pick, and some bad FA contracts. Frankly, I hope Monty has some significant say in roster decisions, since my confidence in Sweeney/Neely is so low right now. I really hope that Monty doesn't become the whipping boy for Front Office shortcomings and then we're looking at a coaching change in 2/3 years. The pressure in Boston will be more than he's dealt with before too. An impatient, A-hole fanbase (best regards to you all) and an impatient A-hole media. According to the Denver rumor mill, there were other problems than just the drinking, although those problems may have been fueled by it. There were allegations in inappropriate conduct and language with women too. I have some friends who knew the Montgomerys pretty well and they loved him, but also acknowledged he was pretty wild and unrefined for a professional coach (long before the Dallas problems). Those struggles came while he was at a Denver U program with easy recruiting and generally built for success. I hope he's changed, and that he's in a stable enough place to take on even tougher coaching challenges than he had in the past. This job won't be easy.

I never said about building around him, but would have been a more than adequate Top 6 center behind Bergeron. Plus/minus is a BS stat unless he was minus 40 or plus 40. As far as DeBrusk being flawed is also forum drivel and targeting. Marchand, for example, who I think is one of the best wingers in the league also has some really bad habits that get overlooked.. same for Pasta who could also be deemed a floater. Both guys dipsy-doodle at both blue lines way too much which are the high danger areas for odd man rushes or breakaways against. March also has a tendency for really bad untimely penalties and suspensions. For whatever reason, these get overlooked by the Boston faithful due to the overwhelming production. But when Jake shows his warts, it is a different story from the Forum and Bruce despite his ability to get some big goals and create breakaways and odd man opportunities. The guy is streaky which can be infuriating, but at the end of the day he is an asset with speed and scoring.

Yeah, I'm pretty suspect of the thinking that Montgomery should just develop the next Kyrou and Thomas on the Bruins roster. Maybe they aren't there. Maybe Kyrou and Thomas are pretty damn good talents, that don't just come along because of a supportive assistant coach. I sure hope Neely isn't looking at players like Studnicka and expecting Magic Monty to turn them into 80 point players like Kyrou and Thomas at age 23 (Studnicka is 23 too). I guess it will be interesting to see what he does with guys like Lysell and maybe Debrusk (if he stays). Beyond that, what other forwards are ripe for development? Harrison..? Beecher...? I think the chef needs more groceries. The Bruins are threadbare up front.

I actually still have a program from the 1993 Hockey East championship at the Garden, where that absurd Maine team led by Kariya and Montgomery laid waste to the rest of the Hockey East. Two NHL goalies on that roster too, with Garth Snow backing up Mike Dunham, and the Ferraro brothers on the 2nd line. Kariya at age 18 is still the most dominant college player I have ever seen, and was one of the only things that could completely overshadow Montgomery's 95-point NCAA season. That team went 42-1.
