"Auston Matthews has 12g in his last 16 games. He's 3rd among all NHL centers with 18 goals on the season."

The B's were in a playoff spot last yr and had games in hand. How did that work out. It looks good or bad on paper though, whichever way you want to look at it, i'll give you that.

I don't know about folding like a cheap tent, but i do think they fade when the games ramp up.

Well forget getting a Canadian citizenship now. Most of the twitter responses were "we'll take Auston on our team".

This reminds me of the reaction from a few when it was revealed that Charlie McAvoy tweeted that he hated the Bruins, three years ago. You mean, a kid from Long Island NY who's 15 years old doesn't like Boston sports teams?!? What an asshole. Auston Matthews is American for God's sake, and posting an American flag after a historic win isn't exactly rubbing it in. Canadians are such classy people generally though (this board notwithstanding), that I can't imagine more than 2% were actually bothered by this.

Leafs fans don't know how to celebrate on Twitter. It wasn't around the last time they had a reason to do so.

Leafs fans don't know how to celebrate on Twitter. It wasn't around the last time they had a reason to do so. Neither was colour TV. Now that they have something to be exited about , most of that fanbase are planning the parade route already...I liked it better when they were the lovable losers

Problem I see for the Leafs in the next couple of years, is past mistakes may prevent them making the necessary additions to make them contenders while the young guns are on entry level deals. Next season for example, they could have 10.5M in IR for Horton & Lupul (we all remember the problems Chiarelli had with Savard's 4.5M when he tried to re-sign Iginla). The Leafs will also have to deal with not having another 1.2M of cap space from Kessel's retained salary, and another 2M for the buyouts of Gleason and Cowan, and there is still the question of performance bonuses that will have to be accounted for (Auston Matthews alone should get his full 2.85M and a couple of others are close to making their bonuses which could add another 2M to next year's cap hit). So that makes approx. 8M dollars that the Leafs do not have access to, and another 10.5M that have restrictions on how and when they can use. Also, there is the expansion draft to deal with, where it looks like the Leafs could lose Leo Komarov, so I see more than a few headaches in the future for the Leafs' number crunchers.

I have watched my fair share of Leaf and Oiler games this season. I know it is probably splitting hairs, but given a choice of which to take between Mcdavid, and Matthews. I will take Matthews. I think he is better now and will be in the future. This kid is just ramping up...his hand , eye coordination is absolutely incredible. He is a handfull trying to keep him in check. Big, powerful, skates, shoots, passes, scores...complete player...

I wonder if McDavid being so flashy actually makes people forget about the rest of his game though. He's almost a victim of his own awesomeness.
Only a select few of us can relate.

As I said " splitting hairs". Matthews has just refused to let the Leafs buckle. That says a lot. Edmonton is a far superior team than Toronto at least on paper. That's what makes Matthews season more impressive to me. He is either leading or tied for most 5 on 5 goals in the league with Crosby and Marchand. Don't know if you caught last nights game , but Matthews has some flash to his game also... He showed he can take pucks and dangle , his give and go with Komarov was awesome... He had less than two inches to put the puck in short side and did it at high speed.. I love McDavid, used to go to a lot of Erie Otters games and marvel at what jI was witnessing...I do worry about his health...he reminds me a lot of Orr. End to end rushes at such high speed , no fear of consequences...I guess that is what makes him awesome..

But I think TOs offensive will dry up The first two weeks of the season have been the most lifeless hockey I've watched in some time. The new nhl isn't fun to watch, no hitting, no fighting, no passion, no rivalries, no anger, no compete. The Leafs got off to a great start last year too. Their def isn't good, it was exposed badly in the playoffs last year and Matthews was a complete waste of space on ice in the playoffs. I will never question his mitts, but wow did he float a lot.

There is some bad blood with a few teams. It will grow as the season moves on.
