The last 2 weeks i've been listening to,Blue Rodeo,Jimmy Dale Gilmore,Black Keys,John Hiatt,Peter Gabriel,Blackie & the Rodeo Kings,Judas Priest,Fred Eaglesmith,Neil Young,Clapton & BB King collaboration,Mumford & Sons,Tom Waits,Metallica, all great stuff. When you listen to Waits voice on the album "Closing Time" and then 20 yrs later on "Mule variations",you can tell there has been a lot of whiskey & smokes taken care of! That's quite the eclectic list Oh yeah, like i mentioned earlier in this thread,i grew up on Heavy metal, hard rock, but over the yrs my musical horizons have broadened,i'll give anything a listen and have come to appreciate all types of musical styles and genres.Becoming a husband and a Dad will do that to you, hah! Still get into my Motorhead,Metallica,Judas Priest,Iron Maiden,Slayer,Pantera,Slip knot,Dio,Black Sabbath,AC DC moods though!

Hard to deny the classics....unless you are a teen now. My boys have more peculiar taste in music, usually a mix of electronica with a hint of modern metal. A strange collaboration

My kids laugh at my CD collection. "Who has those things anymore?" Then I tell them about 8-tracks and they think I am bullshitting them

The Pretenders - Learning to Crawl. Chrissie Hynde put together a solid group after 2 of the original members drugged themselves to death. Robbie McIntosh was one of the new guys. I think Paul Carrack contributed to a track or two. Saw them in concert which is where you really get to see just how good some musicians really are. Loved Martin Chambers on drums. Glad he didn't o.d. like those other nitwits.

I listened to two hours of Johnny Cash's greatest hits today. Outside of the popular tunes, all five or so, I think he sucks.

Mutations by Beck. Good album I'm a big fan of "Guerolito". Interesting move by Beck in that he sold basically the same album twice after remixing it with the Dust Brothers.

Lay off that whiskey and let that ol' cocaine be!
Yeah, the issue with "greatest hits" is hits are often lame. And for country artists, dark backwoods gothic doesn't get radio play, so you end up with a lot of "you were always on my mind". Cash was thug life before Tupac, just, you know, a whiter version.

Yeah, I was never into the whole Johnny Cash thing which seems to be in vogue now. If I wanted to see a guy act tough I would just watch Sons of Anarchy. But to each their own.....

I listened to two hours of Johnny Cash's greatest hits today. Outside of the popular tunes, all five or so, I think he sucks. "Straight A's In Love" is a song of his nobody talks about. Sam Phillips was a better talent scout than recording engineer. He rode a donkey until it died, most of JC's songs have the same repetitive backbeat and style. He was into a sure thing, not everyone worked out for Sun Records. Roy Orbison's Sun recordings suck. Elvis never took off until he left Sun, he was bought out for 40k, an unheard of sum for that time. But I'm with you about Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich kicks everyone's ass on Sun Records. He had the same problem as Carl Perkins, he couldn't figure out whether he wanted to be country or blues or rock and roll. Unlike Perkins, he had a career after the Rockabilly boom, and a fine hit "Behind Closed Doors" in the 70's. For my money, Charlie Rich has one of the best voices I've ever heard from a white person. As for the greatest voice of them all, imho www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjzY5i3jDbcBobby Blue Bland covering Charlie Rich's "Who Will the Next Fool Be."
