Only concern I have is length, given Carlo's injury history (especially concussion), but I like it. Absent injury, I have a feeling that by year 4 or 5 he'll be a huge bargain.

4.1 x 6 is definitely fair dinkum. B's need more solid defenders with size who can skate. Carlo is certainly that.
Scrambled eggs or broken knees are the only thing that can keep this from being an excellent signing.
Clutterbuck will get a pass because it was an unfortunate play, hard but not dirty. On the other side of the coin though...Fuck Tom Wilson in the ass with rusty barbed wire. Seriously.

The guy is really, really good. Easy #2D with size, speed and smarts. Getting UFA years from a guy in his prime for $4 mil is nuts. Amazing deal.

Was having a discussion with someone today who said DS needed to “do his thing” and sign, someone, dont remember who. I said signing FAs and drafting is not DS’ thing. Trades and making excellent extensions under market are.
This deal is an example of the latter. Hoping he doesnt have recurring concussion issues (Suspect he will) but this is a nice contract to start the Summer.
Interesting the 2 injury bug guys are now settled, Carlo and Miller, in opposite directions.

Interesting to go back now and revisit his two year extension. Lots of talk then that the Bruins were getting a savings now but would have to pay him $6M is he started to produce more offense to go with the solid D. I don’t remember what the numbers bandied were but it was over $5M. And the spectre of Subban came up.
I have long thought Montreal did the right things with Subban from forcing him into a bridge to dealing him when they did. His deal looks awful right now, but in some ways that actually works against Montreal’s thinking. They got him at around $3M/yr for two years, but then had to pay $9M per for 8. So Montreal paid him $23.75M over 4 years before wheeling him to the Preds. I can’t recall what he wanted for a long term deal in 12-13, but $6M would have been $24M for those four years. So they got some protection on a developing player for roughly the same price over four years as if they had given him term. Then they moved him when they didn’t like how he was trending.
Carlo is even better. Rather than pay to avoid a risk, the Bruins took one knowing that if they “lose” it’s because Carlo got even better. He was better in year one, struggled in year two. Now they have him at slightly more than his bridge deal for another six which is a huge savings, and he still could get better offensively. Though I will take the defender we saw two years ago and be pretty happy.
It’s a good deal; as good as Carlo is, going much higher would have been a mistake, though. D who don’t put up points don’t get much more than this even is they’re among the best shut down guys in the league. Last year there were just 24 D making $4M or more who were on a 20 points per 82 games pace or less. Most of them have cracked that mark in the past. The only real outliers are Marc Staal (playing out a bad deal), Edler (fading vet), McDonagh (long history of top pairing play and points), Vlassic (playing out the string on an Olympic career), and Trouba (has the rep but didn’t put up the points this year).
All of which is to say it’s a solid deal and I can see how they got there. But it’s not the Jedi mind trick that was the Marchand and Pastrnak deals.

All of which is to say it’s a solid deal and I can see how they got there. But it’s not the Jedi mind trick that was the Marchand and Pastrnak deals. There is something a bit special about this deal, however. It takes Carlo from age 24-30; the years that are almost without exception a player's best. I say almost, as of course there are exceptions (Marchand), but if you take the history of NHL players it's very likely that the next 6 years will see Carlo playing better than he has, and very unlikely he becomes significantly worse. A number of the deals you mentioned above took players well beyond 30, quite often where the value went sour. We talked about it with Nuge, we just saw the Minny deals get bought out. This deal with Carlo is the absolute best scenario for the team: 6 years, at a good price, 24-30. If your entire team was made up with good players in peek years, wow. Remember 2011? Bergeron - 26. Horton - 26. Krecji - 25. Boychuck - 27. And on and on.

You're moving in the right direction, Donnie. I saw a description of Carlo as being a foundational defenseman. For the B's, he is.

I love Brandon Carlo...he's a terrific defenseman who I think was better 2 years ago that this past season...and I'm glad he's a Bruin...if he stays healthy, great deal...if he doesn't, then it is what it is.

Now that the B’S #2 d-man is signed for what was expected per annum that leaves about 26 mil to sign two second-liners, a third-liner, at least a second-pairing d-man and possibly another if Lauzon’s lost….
Then there’s Tuukka and maybe another vet netminder….
Have a feeling Donnie might be looking to find a taker for DeBrusk and going with a cheaper option on that third line….

Good contract If he stays healthy. I think you could make the case that this is a good contract whether he stays healthy or not. Because, really...what does that actually mean? All contracts suck if the guy can't stay healthy, so I would guess that we make a point of saying it when the options are sign the guy...or stay away because of his injury history. Once those guys sign, it's really a question of whether the numbers are both good for the quality of player you're getting AND manageable if he doesn't play. So "good contract if he stays healthy" basically means that it's a good number for the quality of player but not so sure that it's a great number if you need to deal with a string of injuries and don't have the player or have a lesser version of him. I think the number is manageable, though. Part of that is the role Carlo plays and the availability of players as stop gaps. There seem to be a lot fewer stop gaps for defensive defensemen in the league these days, but the ones that are out there are generally on very reasonable deals. If you LTIR Carlo for whatever reason, you can probably acquire or sign a stop gap for about what you get in flexibility. That player won't be Carlo, but for the $3M-$4M range, you'll have some decent options. At because it's a decent number overall, you may even have the stop gap for a shorter absence on the roster because you can afford to carry an extra D and shuffle it up to cover the gap. The most difficult situation is always the injury that causes a permanent drop of in quality of play, but even if that happens with Carlo, his size and reach will mean he's still a serviceable third pairing and penalty killing option. He'll be overpriced, not terribly so - in fact, you probably take a bigger hit in dead money from buying him out than the amount he'd be overpriced. i say good contract period, here. Player is paid at a market rate that reflects where he is, but has shown potential to continue to get better. Can't ask for a lot more without pissing off the players (I'll never forget the look on Neely's face when he finally caved to the Ray Bourque salary cap...).
