Heard Gilbert’s health, at 72 years young, is heading downhill living Quebec City.
“In 1973-74, he was traded to the Bruins as a replacement for Gerry Cheevers who had gone to the World Hockey Association (WHA), played in the NHL All-Star Game, and helped the team to the Stanley Cup finals that year.
In the 1975–76 NHL season, he set the NHL record for most consecutive wins by a goaltender with 17, and finished with a 33-8-10 record for a .843 winning percentage in 55 Games.
From 1976 to 1980, he teamed with Gerry Cheevers to form one of the best goaltending duos in the NHL, being runners-up for the Vezina Trophy in 1980.
Gilbert recorded 17 playoff victories for Boston. As of 2019 he ranks sixth in all-time playoff wins among Boston goaltenders.
Gilbert was the Bruins goalie during the 1979 Stanley Cup playoffs semifinal game 7 against the Montreal Canadiens, when Guy Lafleur tied the game after the infamous too many men penalty against Boston, and then Yvon Lambert scored the series-winning goal in overtime; Gilbert was still named the game's first star. Cheevers was benched after losing the first two games of the series, and Gilbert took over as the starter thereafter, overall being named the game's first star three times in the five games against Montreal.
Montreal's Steve Shutt exclaimed of these performances that “Gilles Gilbert stood on his head. He was the reason they got to the seventh game”.
Cherry has recently talked about how he should have started Gilbert the 1st two games of the 79’ series.

Oh that sucks! I hope he isn't in pain. He's the reason I became a goalie! Scotty Bowman said "If Cherry would've started Gilbert for games 1 & 2 they probably would've won the series. Out of all the teams I coached in the playoffs . There wasn't another goalie who scared me & had me thinking. He's gonna steal this series from us then Gilly did in 79'! He was sensational!"

Had the B’S not circled back to Cheesey in ‘75-‘76 and continued with Gilles as the #1, maybe the B’S take a cup or two away from the Shabs….
Without question in ‘78-‘79 after Gilles made a series out of it taking over from Cheesey in game #3 after the Shabs had won the first two….
Remember witnessing Gilles play a spectacular game as a rookie for the North Stars at the Montreal Forum….
R.I.P

If he only had made one last save..........RIP Gilles. Brad Park called it a one a million shot. Marcotte had shadowed LaFleur most of the game...but when the Habs were on that fateful PP (too many men), Larry Robinson laid a basketball type illegal pick/intereference on Don inside the Habs zone. If you find the video you can see it, but it allowed Guy to race freely along the boards racing into the B's blue line to rip that tying goal. Yes, one in the million blast but not happening if Robinson doesn't make a great play.

My older brothers told me was a wicked good third baseman and played softball at our local ball park from time to time. I worked with a guy who was good friends with him - he was a great impersonator apparently till Cherry caught him doing himself and I think that ended up leading to him getting traded. RIP Gilles Gilbert
