I am starting to change my tune, think DK is coming back around Christmas. Seems strange to me he wouldn't have announced yet, he's back in Boston, perfect time to announce if he was. Chance to play with Pasta as teams #1 Center. Has to be a draw. They aren't Cup favorites with him but I like the lineup a lot more. Favorite? Maybe not, but in the mix for sure. It would basically be the same team as last year minus Bergie and Hall, but with some added toughness and Geekie produced at a similar level to Bergie 5 on 5.

And although Zacha is ready to be a center, I'd look hard at keeping the Czech's together again. They were the best line in the league last year.

Zacha-DK-Pasta Marchand-Geekie-Debrusk Lauko-Coyle-JVR Looch-Freddy-Grier Yeah, I think I'd try something like that as Plan A, knowing that you can adjust fairly quickly if Geekie isn't able to make it work as a 2C. Be interesting to give him that chance to slot right into Bergeron's old spot and see whether he rises to the occasion or not. I don't want Freddy on the 4th line unless it's with an eye to him moving up as a C at some point; basically, do you want him to get reps on the draw, and playing in the middle with the C system responsibilities? Not sure that I expect him to score 20 goals playing with Coyle without Hall's playmaking on the other wing, but I would like to see him take on some of the TOI freed up by Hall and Bertuzzi's departures - they played about 13:40-14:00 at ES. They actually played more at ES than Bergeron, Marchand, DeBrusk, and Zacha - all guys who saw big TOI on special teams because they play in all situations. I'd like Freddy to play a couple of extra shifts a game, even. Coyle played 13:44 at ES last year, so get Freddy closer to that - 12:40-13:00. To make that happen with your top 2 lines, I'd go with this bottom six: JVR-Coyle-Frederic Lucic-Beecher-Lauko.

What an amazing career and the only jersey I have worn in last 13 years at any game. Such a terrific IQ player, passer, under-rated shooter, such a clutch player on so many occasions in playoffs and reg. season. The guy when you are down 2-1 and the goalie is pulled is going to make a great play. #46...hope he has a wonderful retirement.

Such a terrific IQ player, passer, under-rated shooter, such a clutch player on so many occasions in playoffs and reg. season. The guy when you are down 2-1 and the goalie is pulled is going to make a great play. #46...hope he has a wonderful retirement. I had a danny moment reading the NHL.com announcement and the phrase "often considered the 1B to Patrice Bergeron." Nope. I think it's fair to say that in most of the 15 seasons they played together between the 2007-08 season where Krejci broke through and last year, not counting the year in Czechia, you either couldn't clearly identify a 1A or DK was that 1A as often as Bergeron. Krejci year 1, neither was 1A - Savard was. Bergeron only played 10 games. Krejci year 2, ditto, with Krejci clearly the #2 and well ahead of a recovering Bergeron. Krejci year 3, they tied in points but Bergeron had more points/game and more goals; however, you would have hard time saying either was the #1 based on linemates and usage. Bergeron had more overall TOI, but as has been true for many years, Krejci played more at even strength. Krejci year 4, DK's line with Lucic and Horton was the clear #1 in my eyes. Bergeron was riding with the aging Recchi and the raw Marchand as a rookie. DK had more points, played more minutes, and more at ES. So for the first time, clear decision for DK. Krejci year 5, dead heat in scoring (2 point difference, almost identical points/game) with DK playing more at ES again. Linemates are no help with Marchand and Segzy (led them in scoring) flanking Bergeron, Lucic and Horton back with DK. Krejci year 6, near dead heat again - 1 point apart, Bergeron the better points/game, Krejci the ES TOI leader. Krejci year 7, clear win for DK playing with Lucic and Iginla while Bergeron begins a stretch of playing with an uncertain RW. Krejci year 8, Bergeron with the win due to injury in a terrible year where no one scores more than 55 points, and only Bergeron has more than 50. Krejci year 9, close to a dead heat in points/game but Bergeron clearly the #1A. First time he played more at even strength than DK. Linemates were telling - Bergeron with Marchand and often with Eriksson. DK got Beleskey, Hayes, a kid named Pasta, Brett Connolly. DK year 10, DK outscores Bergeron by a point in 3 more games despite Marchand going off for 39-46-85. Pastrnak emerges. DK again plays the most ESTOI. DK11. Cassidy Era. BLiH. Clearly Bergeron's line is the classic #1; Cassidy clearly prefers to load up as a way to get back to the playoffs. Bergeron outscores Krejci by the widest points/game margin of their shared careers as DK breaks in rookies on his wings. Bergeron plays a modest amount of ESTOI more than DK. He's actually 5th in that category as both centres only played 64 games. DK 12. CE2. BLiH year two, and Bergeron has the best points/game year of his career, but Krejci still outscores him in total points and plays significantly more TOI at ES as Bergeron misses 15 games. DK better ESTOI per game. DK 13. CE3. Bergeron and the BLiH lead the team in scoring, but DK again plays more at ES. 2RW remains a desert. DeBrusk falls off a cliff at the 2/3rds mark and doesn't recover for two years. DK 14. CE4. 4 point difference in scoring even though the BLiH rides again. DK leads the team in EVTOI. DK 15. Last year. After a year in Czechia, DK plays over 2 min per game more at ES than Bergeron, and scores two fewer points in 8 fewer games. Long story short: there are probably only 3-4 years where you could clearly say that one or the other was the obvious #1A and the other #1B if you look at both performance and usage. Early in the era of this dynamic duo, it was Krejci who was used as the #1A and Bergeron who was leading his line to match the performance of DK's line. In the Cassidy/Montgomery era, it's Bergeron's line that has been used as the 1A but DK who has produced at almost the same clip and often with inferior wingers. But over the entire period, DK has played more at ES than Patrice Bergeron with very few exceptions. Since 2007-08, over 1026 games, Krejci has played an average of 14:46 per game at even strength, a total of over 15100 minutes. That's over 500 minutes more than Bergeron in 39 fewer games, amounting to a minute per game more. Even that is equivocal. On the one hand, the question of #1 and #2 (or A and B) really only matters at even strength because there's no reason not to have both of them on the PP together, or in theory on the PK. On the other, Bergeron played more in all situations - an average of about 37 seconds more per game. But then classic #1C don't often lead the team in PKTOI because the coach wants to save them for scoring situations. But then PB averaged more PPTOI than DK. I think DK was every bit as good a player as Bergeron with different strengths. I think the Bruins built the now-ended era (only Marchand remains...it's a new world order now) around the way Chara and Bergeron played the game, and DK has the will and the skill to play that game under Julien, under Cassidy and under Montgomery. He probably deserves more credit for transforming himself from an elite go-go scorer in junior - 32 points in 17 games in his final junior playoffs - to the guy who defended Sid so well he drove him nuts. The Bruins had possibly the best tandem of two way centres any team has ever had - you could make a case for Lemaire and Gainey or Yzerman and Federov. Neither was Robin to the other's Batman. Three coaches more or less used them interchangeably. Give DK the credit he's due on his retirement day. I don't think he's got it often enough for the rest of his career, and I think it will be disappointing but not surprising if he falls short of the Hall while Bergeron gets in.

I don't think he's got it often enough for the rest of his career, and I think it will be disappointing but not surprising if he falls short of the Hall while Bergeron gets in. Fitting that both 37 and 46 retire same year...as you said so many similarities at least from the offensive standpoint and let's face it DK was turned into a weird I called it "break out glass in case of emergency" guy under Cassidy. Also ironic that for a great portion of time DK had Horton/Lucic and then The Perfection Line for Bergeron, meaning both had their regular lines as a #1. You can't separate the 2 because they were the perfect set of 1 and 2 centers. Incredible to have that for such a long time in NHL terms and one team terms. The B's were very fortunate that DK developed so fast and 37 was so great to join NHL by age 18. Hard to not think 37 and 46 unless they were together. I brought up the 5 on 6 because in the greatest rallies in reg. season and playoffs, it was both on the ice at the same time. That didn't happen much under Cassidy/Monty as far as PP (I don't even remember under Julien if they were on at same time--I think for a while they shared first PP). But it's a tandem that will never be matched for 200 foot hockey. DK could have just as easily been part of the regular SH rotation, but I think wisely it helped him to not have that burden a bit on special teams, allowing him that even strength TOI that bookboy noted. Miss both, will try to find new B's to stir my cat fancy.

Easily top 10 favorite Bruin of all time. Big time let down this off-season compared to last. When DK came back there was so much hype, I followed him and Pasta's drinking tour all summer and then PB and DK announced their dirt cheap deals. It was fun. This year we got Looch and he met up with Pasta walking his baby. Less fun than pints in Prague. The Zacha trade was great. I'm cautiously excited about the Geekie signing and love seeing Lucic back. JVR and Shattenkirk will probably be good moves, but the loss of PB, DK and Hall from last year's Oct roster is significant.

Gotta say, it is a sad day, for me. Outside of LBOH, DK was my fav player. Smooth as silk, and twice as smart.
I know this isn't popular here, but I think DK was a better Offensive player than PB. All around PB is a better player, but from what I saw, Krejci had better skills in setting up plays and making un-fucking-believable passes. I don't think Patrice could have done the double toe-drag, and fed a perfect pass to Hall.
He was the # 1 Center on the Cup winning team, and has 2 Playoff scoring Titles.
Guys like him and Nifty are a big reason I watch hockey - well many reasons, but sublime play making is so very rare.
Enjoy Retirement David, you earned it.

Patrice has a better shot, but DK is the guy you'd want distributing pucks. Two playoff scoring titles is an incredible feet, and I don't think he gets enough credit for it. I do wish they won a couple more titles with him lighting it up just for histories sake. A really great player.
