I think the "guy gets hot" thing is overplayed, really. I think you get a Trent Dilfer winning the Super Bowl or a Nick Foles about as often as an Antti Niemi. And I have seen franchise goalies go out and win the Cup. About 1/4 of the Conn Smythe winners since 1983 have been goalies, and more of the winners were regular season stars than guys who got hot. Roy, Billy Smith, Hextall, Vernon (finished 2, 4, 4 for the Vez in different years), Giguere (4 seasons where he was top 10 for the Vez) and of course Timmy. Roy absolutely carried the Shabs to the Cup in 1986 and 1993. Hex won his in a losing effort against one of the greatest teams of all time. I think it's probably fair to say, though, that the goalie has less control over whether he's going to be the story or not. A great QB touches the ball on every offensive play from scrimmage, so he has all the opportunity to try to force the game to bend to his will. Goaltending is more passive in that you can't make a series of acrobatic saves if the team you're playing against doesn't give you the chance. You might give up two goals and never see either of them and lose 2-1. Nothing you can do at that point to somehow change your fate except hope your offense bails you out and you keep the goals against to just those two. Absolutely agree with this QB vs Goalies, although I can think of instances when the QB simply dominated the game and the defense refused to let him win. Brady vs Philly in the SB comes to mind where he simply did enough to win the game and be MVP again, but BB’s Malcolm Butler Exile resulted in a defense that literally couldn’t make a play the second half. But that’s an outlier. As a goaltender, I’ll say it’s true that it’s not just the GAA or other hard stats in how a goaltender becomes the most important player at playoff time. It’s making the timely saves in that 1 goal game. Some goalies are just good at that… Billy Smith. Fuhr. Dryden. Some guys do that in a playoff series and make an opposing team believe they just aren’t gonna tie the score. It’s massive. There’s something to this “goalie gets hot” affecting a championship run, but it’s very hard to measure. I don’t think it has much to do with franchise goalies, though. Bernie Parent.........SMDH, just like Espo did.

Biggest disappointment is Jersey! I thought for sure they'd take over that divison with the Rangers. I know they've been decimated by injuries, but I thought they'd be deep enough to handle that. Their goaltending like a lot of teams is a crapshoot on any given night. I honestly think Ottawa is going to tease again at the tail end of the season. They're like the Leafs version for the 2020's without making the playoffs. They come into the season with so much promise & fanfare & then shit the bed most of the season. Then come on at the last quarter & give their fans damp vags & hard ons going into the summer & then we have the hockey version of Groundhog Day!

Your statement on goalies making the other team believe they just aren't gonna score holds true. Rask in 13' against the Pens, Thomas in 11' in games 2 against Philly, Game 5 & 7 against the Bolts & the whole Canuck series. Roy in any OT game in 93' except Game 2 against Quebec. Brodeur/Hasek in 94' (best goalie duel I ever witnessed). Fuhr would allow a TON of goals, until the Oilers got into a barn burner of a 7-6 game, but Grant just wouldn't allow that next one the other team needed. His 1-0 win against the Islanders in game 3 in the 84' finals was poetry in motion! Moog in game 7 against the Sabres in 92 was another. You could see the other teams frustration after ever chance! Slamming doors, sticks, arguing with teammates on the bench! Next to great sex & driving fast there's nothing better than having a player having his arms up like he just scored only to see that look of joy disappear when he finds out that he needs to go to the dressing room, grab his cell phone & call 911 to say he was just robbed & I was the one that robbed him!!

The Dead Things. They finished 35-37-10 for 80 points last season so you figured they were headed in an upwards trajectory but maybe weren't there yet to seriously contend. Looks like that club is learning how to win at 26-18-6 for 58 points, seventh in the Eastern Conference, tied pointwise with the Leaves who flop around in the sixth spot and one point back of Tampa. They're not among the choices but let me give honourable mention to the Oil who are going for their 17th straight win tonight against Vegas. Not too shabby when looking at how they started. Go Vegas.

Not his fault but Ruff could be on the chopping block.
