Texas Tornados first album, Jimmy Smith/Grant Green and Putamayo's collection CDs of Latin Jazz. I haven't listened to "White Music" in 10 years. Freddie King's singles on Modern/Kent and in the car I just listen to FL party music stations. Nice stuff, henry. I always like Freddie Fender. In my younger days, my buddies and I would use one of his songs as our anthem if we went out and didn't score chicks: "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights." Jimmy Smith and Grant Green were brilliant. Smith's playing the Hammond B3 on "Walk On The Wild Side," even though he only enters the song more than halfway through is the highlight. If you haven't already, please check him out on "Back At The Chicken Shack." As for guitarist Grant Green, it's tough to find a better groove than "Sookie Sookie." Well done. I had no idea that was him on "Walk on the Wild Side." Lou Reed always had great bands. I've got "Back at the Chicken Shack," I think that record was Stanley Turrentine's big break, and it has Kenny Burrell who was a star in his own right. The Blue Note record label put out a lot of great jazz in the 60's.

The Blue Note record label put out a lot of great jazz in the 60's. I didn't know the guitar solo on "Back At The Chicken Shack" was Kenny Burrell. And yeah, Blue Note had quite the roster of talent in Herbie Hancock, Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Ornette Coleman and Coltrane to name a few.

Now that the nice weather is here, the music i listen to regularly has officially changed. Been listening to a lot of Joe Strummers solo stuff lately, lotta clash, the breeders, pixies and picked up a Wilco album on vinyl the other day which has gotten a good few plays. Anything good you guys have been listening to lately? Eric Burdon and the Animals "when I was young". Willie Nelson...Johnny Cash...Nazz...Emerson Lake and Palmer...Beau Brummels... movie soundtracks...Dianna Ross...U2...Barbara Streisand...Johnny Hartman...Dylan...Sinatra...Richard Rodgers...the Who...music for dining...planetarium type music...and Kansas, to name a few!

Ah, the good old prog rock days. Got the 500th (or whatever) anniversary edition of "Thick As A Brick" for Christmas a couple of years ago, but never seem to find the time to listen to it.

ELP... From the Begining was a favorite, as was Lucky Man
and of course Dust in the Wind by Kansas.

Listened to probably the most un-hockey fan music today. Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. She does, however, reference the Maple Leafs and is from Canada so I guess it is somewhat hockey like.
I see Watch mentioned Kansas. I used to make it a point to try and meet my rockstar heroes when I was a teenager (The Who, ELP, Yes, Allman Bros, Grateful Dead, Foghat, among others...) and I had the sad misfortune of meeting those jackholes back when they were hugely popular back in the late 70's. They were a bunch of super arrogant, pretentious, rock star posing snots. Treated their fans like total shit...haven't listened to them since.

Why in the HELL would I want to bring back the '80s - in the sense that that usually means for popular music? Good stuff happened in music in the 80s, but it's under a decomposing compost heap of total dead ends in music. Which brings me to one of my favorite stories (this telling from mic.com/articles/105136/miles-davis-did-more-for-modern-music-than-you-probably-ever-thought):At a White House dinner party in 1987, a politician's wife made the mistake of asking Miles Davis why jazz was essentially dead in America. "Jazz is ignored here because the white man likes to win everything," Davis answered in his typically terse and brutal manner. Shaken, she fired back: "Well, what have you done that's so important in your life? Why are you here?" "Well, I've changed music five or six times," he told her, "What have you done of any importance other than be white — and that ain't important to me — so tell me what your claim to fame is?"

Ugh. I hope not. Well, I hope there are people who enjoy their music (OK Computer is pretty awesome) but not Radiohead-philes. I think they're good, as many are good, but not the Gods of All Things Music as some of those cranks think!

Yeah, they seemed to pick up a weird cult following that's way over the top.
I still love the music though. The Bends and OK Computer are two of my favorite albums, cover to cover. A few live shows are amazing too.

A few live shows are amazing too. Saw Radiohead in Boston in 2006. Weird because they weren't touring behind an album (In Rainbows hadn't yet come out). They're good live, but wouldn't put it in my top 15 shows ever. Listening to Favourite Colours by The Sadies today. These guys are really super and great in concert. If you like Clarence White era Byrds or psychedelic country surf type music you should love these guys.

Saw them perform in '97, and I was blown away. But I prefer their older stuff. I love the entire "The Bends" album, and IMHO "Fake Plastic Trees" is one of the best songs ever written.
