You know I ripped Rask no question for some of the not finishing over the years (and it is my fan hurt of seeing his team suffer sometimes due to his personal issues--again the emergency was far different from the other walkaways/stomach aches but it was handled poorly as discussed too much), but I am not stupid either to know he is one of the best 5 goalies in the 21st century, certainly a Hall of Famer. It is not his fault that the team lost some of those close calls toward a Cup, and in fact if he wasn't for the goalie's monster play, the team may never have gotten as far in 13,19 in particular.
With that said, watching goalies throwing shutouts, GMs and coaches getting their teams to the 7th game of a Cup final, winning a President's Trophy, somehow just being okay or even mediocre is silly. Reading how a poster can somehow make something out of a Stanley Cup winning coach being criticized by his players so he was fired, but then he DESERVED it. This stuff is just getting out of control. Only one team can win the Cup in one year. Whether it's v. 12 teams or 31 teams, it's an achievement, it's hard to do. How do we know it's hard? Well the Big Bad Bruins of the 1970s won just 2 cups, the Boston Celtics had a dominating roster in the NBA, but only won a few NBA titles (thanks a lot to do with the Lakers being a little better). The Patriots are the exception (and the Red Sox with 04, 07, 13, 18) that you can win multiple championships and do it in a short time period. The Bruins won in '11, and it took monumental effort to do so, and it was a great job by PC and Julien and the players who won 7th games and won close games, OT games, etc.
All of the ripping of the B's, and some of it occurred even during the Cup finals of 19, is just selfish fans wanting it all. We all wanted that Cup in 19, we should have gotten it, and it didn't happen. Somehow since that time, Sweeney and Neely and Cassidy are now poor leaders by some posters in here. But if the 11 B's lost the SC finals, PC would have been labled a poor leader, Julien a poor coach, etc. It's all about that last game, sure I get it. But let's have a dose of reality.
The B's have been a tremendously successful team, a Cup contender/champ with PC/Julien for several years and a Cup finalist, President Trophy with DS/Cassidy and it's not over yet. The team in a 56-game season is off to a slow start, but it's not like they are getting beat 7-1 and it's not like some of the offensive lacking (5-on-5) hasn't occurred during the Cup finalist season and last season's President Trophy run. It happens.
Just tired of success being scrutinized so much, people lose touch with reality. There are a number of NHL teams that flat out suck, some without goalies, some without leaders, some without veteran leaders, some without good coaches, some without a good GM, some franchises that the fans can't stomach another playoff miss or first round playoff exit. Be happy to be a B's fan, the franchise has done some great things, hasn't won the Cups in the frequency we want or that many at all since 1972, but hey it's a hard thing to do. Winning the Cup requires the planets to align, the hockey gods to let bounces go your way, and good hockey throughout those playoffs.
I'm pleased with the B's leadership that did not blow up the original core group when other greedy GMs/Presidents might have panicked because of a slow start or rough stretch in a particular season. Kings, Hawks had success, now they don't, so maybe B's have learned a bit from the cap issues that occurred for both, and some of the trades they made that weakend their teams after their Cups. B's being a competitive team is all I ask. They are, and I like that the kids are being incorporated. I know this is a forum, and we are here to criticize, but let's again realize it is not as bad as some of you paint the B's picture. It's pretty good to have 37,73,88,63,46,40 out there on a nightly basis. Pretty fun when they are clicking too. Go B's!
