I know its really early but we have a few candidates for getting the axe. I would say there are 3 right now, those being Ducharme, Colliton & Bednar. Of the 3 i think Bednar is safe for awhile yet but the Avs have high expectations, less so for the Hawks but i think management is expecting a playoff berth. Montreal has no expectations because they suck and have for awhile but 0-5 is still 0-5. The thing that Ducharme has going for mhim is his shiny new 3 yr deal which BargainBin handed out this past summer, thats alot of salary to chow down, maybe he'll ride it out this year and then get it. There's a few unemployed coaches waiting to get back in, such as Julien, Babcock & Boudreau to name a few. The question is who will pull the trigger first?

I don't know that his trading has been that awful. I think the good trades outweigh the bad. Their leading scorer, JT Miller, was acquired by trade and the only real cost was a 20th pick. Great trade on paper to get Schmidt for a 3rd; he was awful for them, but Benning got his 3rd back when he shipped him to Winnipeg. He's been a different player for the Jets, but that doesn't get factored into his trade value ahead of time. And the OEL/Garland trade deserves some respect because he moved out $12M in short term ugly salaries AND got two upgrades for his lineup for a first and a second basically. Now, those were ugly salaries HE brought on.... I look at that roster and you have to ask why they suck so badly. After 17 games, they're barely up on the Krakheads. Miller's a point/game C and great value at $5.25M. Hughes has 14 points and he's +5, so while he's not cheap, he might still be good value. Garland's good value and producing. Horvat is being Horvat, and Hoglander is producing as a young player, and like Hughes, his +/- is pretty solid (+4) for a guy on a team with a -16 goal differential. But Pettersson and Boeser are both luke warm for points and -3. Demko's pretty good - lots of silly stats that put him among the very best goalies in the league, but that's got a lot to do with being behind a very limp defense, and Benning hasn't done nearly as well bringing in defenders. Behind Hughes, they've got Myers, who is the opposite of Demko in being roasted by the silly stats people, OEL who most agree is overpaid and who they're rehabilitating to some degree after the trauma of the desert. Hamonic hasn't been the same since leaving the island, and now he's out. Lots of scrubs. Lots. And not many high value D picks in the system. That's on Benning. So a little from column A...etc. Hard to get a sense of what he's actually built when two of his centrepieces are underperforming right now, and they might also look a little different if Hamonic and Schenn were in the lineup all year. Have to think Green's a little nervous. If they put Benning on notice, he may try to save his skin with a coaching change. If they fire Benning, the new guy probably brings in his own coach. |

The great thing about this thread is how easily it becomes "OK, who's next?"
Looking at the bottom of the standings doesn't help much but it sure is fun. No one's worse than Arizona, but I'm guessing they're saying "good job, boys! you're on the wright track!" And they just hired Tourigny. Montreal is second worst by points percentage. Just signed a 3 year deal with "third time's" Ducharme. I don't think Bergevin gets another coach; he's a lame duck right now. Krakheads? Expansion. Senators? Just reupped DJ Smith and have been devastated by COVID.
Vancouver is the next team on the list. King has gotten the Hawks out of the bottom 5. Chicago is next, though, followed by the Isles, and Barry's going nowhere until they at least get to play at home.
What about Mike Sullivan? The back to back magic is a long way back now. Pens have only won one round since. They were embarassed in the bubble year by Montreal, and then lost to teh Isles last year. They still have Crosby and Malkin, though their health is an issue and that contributes to their 25th place points%. New GM and whatever Burke's title is. Team went from back to back Cups with Murray and Fleury to neither of those guys being on the roster. Gotta think they're measuring planks, at least.
What about Rick Bowness? Took them to the Final in the bubble after taking over from Jim Montgomery in unexpected circumstances, but overall the Stars are just 55.1 points%, good for 18th in that time. Powerplay's been really good, but the PK has really sucked. And his stars have not been the stars for the Stars. Since he took over, Segzy has scored 0.67 points/game. Benn, 0.63. Radulov, 0.65. Pavelski's 0.74 is pretty good for a 60 year old, but Hintz and Robertson are carrying the load...and now Heiskanen. But they still can't win.
I think Bednar's still on the list, but no closer to the block than before.

When the top of your forward group is Pettersson and Boeser, Miller and Horvat and Garland, and yuo have a couple of quality rookies in Hoglander and Podkolzin, and fringe scorers like Pearson and Chiasson, you shouldn't be a bottom 5 team. Not if you have Demko in net, and Hughes to run your PP. I think the flaw in the build is the bottom of the roster and the blueline. Too many AHLers instead of bottom six NHLers, and a blueline that probably asks too much of guys like Hamonic and Schenn and OEL. But those are the roster spots you might expect coaching to protect. Give some guys who can skate with high motors and some decent hockey IQ a plan. Shelter young D a bit. That kind of thing. Doesn't seem to be the case in VanCity. |
