Now that the nice weather is here, the music i listen to regularly has officially changed. Been listening to a lot of Joe Strummers solo stuff lately, lotta clash, the breeders, pixies and picked up a Wilco album on vinyl the other day which has gotten a good few plays.
Anything good you guys have been listening to lately?

Hmmm, Pixies - good stuff... I just went through my annual Richard Thompson phase, today it was back to some good old rock'n'roll from Australia - Cold Chisel

Been listening to the War on Drugs album this week, Lost in the Dream.
The song 'An Ocean Between the Waves' is blowing me away. Some combination of an auto-drummer, real drums, guitar, and light vocals makes one cool combination there.
Give it a listen.

Lately I have been simply going with Pandora. I have an Alt 80s channel I just put on and let it play. Most is stuff I like. Then The Smiths come on and I skip a song

Who would have thought so many alt music fans here. NICE ! Me and Dave already discussed our Punk favorites (and not the new punks like Green day that's for MARCO) . Funny thing I pulled up an old DVD (have it on vinyl also) The Chameleons. I forgot how good they were. bfnj Big Country , pretty good, got me singing ...in a big country ..

Texas Tornados first album, Jimmy Smith/Grant Green and Putamayo's collection CDs of Latin Jazz. I haven't listened to "White Music" in 10 years.
Freddie King's singles on Modern/Kent and in the car I just listen to FL party music stations.

The three most recent albums (yes, albums) I've played are, Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime, and Talking Head's Remain in Light (this sounds incredible on vinyl). I've also been listening to a boatload of '71-'73 Grateful Dead on archive.org. some really amazing shows in that period.

Today's music mix at work includes Gin Blossoms, Matthew Sweet, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tonic, James Brown, Editors, Foo Fighters, Jennifer Trynin, Living Colour, B-52's, Kings Of Leon, and a nice tune from the 60s: The Left Banke's "Walk Away Renée"...

About 20 years ago, I was a bellhop at this fancy hotel near Tanglewood Music Hall in western Mass. After carrying some bags up to a room and parking the car I got talking to the couple checking in about local stuff to do. When they left, a guy at the front desk said "did you know that was Lucinda Williams?". I said "who?", and he shook his head at me and walked away. I filed the name away and became a fan about a decade later.

I love George Jones, him and Ray Price are my favorite male country singers. I think "A Man Can Cry" would work for Gionta after her tore his bicep in 2013 vs Ottawa. The Texas Tornados might be my favorite roots band of all time. I like "Is Anyone Goin to San Antone" on that record. They had all of these heavyweights with Freddy Fender, Doug Sahm, Augie Myers and Flaco Jimenez but they all clicked and made it work. I've been to a lot of gigs with all these heavyweights and they either don't click or they're noxiously deferential without anyone taking the lead, like an Olympic team or something. On that first CD, they had Mike Buck who was the early drummer for The Fabulous Thuderbirds before they recorded "Tuff Enuff" and got famous. Doug Sahm has a great album out there recorded on the Antone's label called "Jukebox Music" that's been forgotten about. "The Last Real Texas Blues Band" is another. Clifford Antone always had those guys play on his birthday and he had access to any blues musician he wanted. The only other musician I can compare that's up there with Doug Sahm, who could play multiple instruments for multiple genres AND be the best band leader around is Ike Turner. He didn't have the staying power of Doug Sahm, but then again, he really made a mess of things.

Yeah i didn't realize how diverse everyones individual tastes really are. Im all over the place too. I remember on BDC i talked to someone about liking the lemonheads, and then I recently had a discussion about the Dead Kennedys with BSlegion. Good stuff guys. Obviously this isn't relevant to hockey, but we should update this thread with any new recommendations or shit like that.

I grew up a headbanger and still love it,but as i got older my musical tastes diversified,i like all types and will give anything and everything a listen. Just because a band, male or female artist doesn't play music you think you'll like, talent is talent and i find some music might take awhile and a few listens, but a lot of times the music grows on you. Many times when i would go into my local music store and buy what i like,i would then buy a CD just going by the crazy name of the band or the wild cover art, didn't even know the genre of the music, many times these turned out to be great finds and other times duds but it was interesting nonetheless.I'm always open to new suggestions on any types of music to try out,i'm all ears so to speak. Lets keep this thread open,i'm all for the updates.

Doug Sahm was amazing, and like you say his ability to play multiple instruments, different genres was great enough, his being a bandleader was the topper. I'll have to see if i can get that Sahm album you mentioned in CD,order it in.

I listen to a wide variety of stuff. Classical. punk. industrial. My latest find? Kyari Pamyu Pamy, Japanese pop singer. Check out this video and be prepared for sensory overload.
And for the other end of the spectrum, "And One" military fashion show

I still like late sixties, seventies right up until his death.

Hey, great idea Davey. Good thread.
I have two huskies, so I'm out walking around a lot and listen to a ton of music when I do. Like others, my taste has continued to diversify over time, and yeah, season makes a difference. This time of year, especially if I get the dogs out of the city, I listen to a lot of old blues like Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson, Johnny Shines, The Rev. Gary Davis, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson etc., and some of the later stuff like Albert King, John Mayall, Howlin' Wolf, Junior Kimbrough.
Bowers - I like Grant Green but I'm more of a Wes Montgomery guy. A taste for Mingus crept up on me so gradually I didn't realize how much I had.
The new avatar will tell you I was listening to some early Elvis recently. One of his latest projects is the New Basement Tapes - re-doing the Dylan. Haven't laid my hands on it yet. Red and I had a long conversation about our taste in punk - DRI, DOA, SNFU, Black Flag - and I'm glad to see someone bring up the Butthole Surfers. Some musicographer here will call me a philistine for this, but I can put them and the Pixies on on shuffle and it's a good mix.
Country has...limited appeal for me. It's a reaction to growing up an "inner city" kid in a town where people wear Stetsons to office jobs. But I was a fan of Whiskytown and still like a lot of Ryan Adams' stuff; Gillian Welch; Johnny Cash. Big Neil Young fan, too, and a lot of his stuff has a country/folk element to it - well, "a lot" meaning when he's not working with Crazy Horse. Generally, I like that roots/blues/country intersection.
Work music tends to be stuff I can listen to and still concentrate, which is kind of an odd mix of stuff. I've got a bunch of Ali Farka Toure stuff and mix it with Alpha Diallo for an African guitar playlist. Throw in some Cuban stuff. Verve Remix is good, too. Then there's the other side where I need to concentrate AND I need to suck up some energy. That's when it's Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Revolting Cocks...that kind of drum machine driven stuff.
Anyway, yeah, keep this going. Always glad when someone turns me on to something I'm missing.

I can help you out a lot there, I don't listen to a whole lot of jazz compared to blues, but I used to study with Paul Rishell's wife Annie Raines for harmonica off and on for a few years. Paul Rishell is probably the best fingerpicking blues guitar player that's still active. In NE, there's a local guy name Paul Geremiah who is almost as good. Here's the best site if you like blues/rockabilly/R and B/surf. You can go broke just reading the front page. www.bluebeatmusic.com/Which Sonny Boy Williamson do you like? There was the real Sonny Boy Williamson who got killed with an ice pick, then Rice Miller, or Sonny Boy Williamson II. Buying blues records is really tricky because of the quality of the recordings and the players on the sessions themselves vary. My favorite stuff is the 50's blues from Chess, especially Little Walter and Muddy Waters. I go by record labels. You would like this one: www.bluebeatmusic.com/product_info.php?products_id=9457Robert Nighthawk gets forgotten but this is a classic: www.bluebeatmusic.com/product_info.php?products_id=20267

I've always liked Walter Horton, but you're right - I don't have much in my collection; just some stuff on anthologies. I will follow up on these.
