dream season, just so amazing on so many different levels.
but...we've been somewhat down this road plenty. pretty much top team in the league, then go down to a much lessor rival.
as much as I love the and cherish the way this year is going down...I absolutely love reading that the Bruins are "in on" pretty much every significant piece out there. it proves management is absolutely committed to the big prize...and doing some serious "thinkin". i'm absolutely thrilled about all this potential.
year after year after year, we complain(and rightfully so imo) that the suits stand pat, when everybody else is all in.
obviously...and "obviously" is a woefully inadequate term, to suggest it doesn't appear we need much. at this point in time, it just seems dumb not to award the Cup already.
but a lotta shit will happen between now and June. if anyone would take it, straight up, a responsible bet, would be to wager the Bruins will not win the Cup. just as it's demanded of the players to always improve, grow, and resist the notion to be content....management has to too.
i have very few suggestions, as to whats needed, but I'm really glad Sweeney and co are doing their diligence. We have plenty of expendable parts on the current roster, and if they can be upgraded for insurance that's gotta be a positive.
and I'm not one ounce worried about "chemistry". that's all being calibrated too. those that drive influence, won't be going anywhere.

Never bad to hear that management is knocking on all doors and seeing what, if anything makes sense. To not do that would be negligent for sure. BUT, to me the fan perspective and pressure on management is perhaps the worst factor in what we end up doing because it has nothing to do with how the team performs. It's all optics. The concern in the back of Sweeney's mind that if he doesn't do anything, and we don't win he'll be skewered is absolutely true and valid, except that it really shouldn't factor into the decision. OK, so we're "all in", which means that the short term goal of winning the cup this year trumps all future goals (within reason). Great. Now the decision is more... Who do we think can improve this current roster? Are they available? Where do we envision them? How much better than our current player are they? What is the risk they don't fit? Who from our current roster is move-able? What do we lose if we move them? In skillset? In team chemistry? What are they worth? Who from our pipeline are we willing to move? (presumably everyone) What are they worth to us? And then if we find a dancing partner, and the price is reasonable, and we can beat out the other suiters, then something happens. Frankly, I don't see the stars aligning for anything more than depth. But that will be the right thing to do, and provide just enough cover to Sweeney to say he committed to a cup run. Peverley and Chris Kelley 2.0. Except, I think they like our third line options. If we're healthy, on forward I only see upgrades to the 4th line. Sure there are some high end guys out there, but who is a true upgrade, and what is the risk if you bump one of our core guys out of, or down, the line-up? I love the idea of Toews, but it just seems management loves Charlie Coyle and the style of that third line. Horvat is a stud, but he's not displacing Bergy or DK in the year of destiny, and I'd imagine Jake is a goner and he'd slot in there. BUT, Jake is right smack in the "new core" of this team. He came up through the organization with Pasta, McAvoy, Freddy, etc. He's been disgruntled, but he may be tight with a lot of those guys, so who knows how they'd react if he got traded after his epic turnaround of the last season of hockey? On defense, bottom pair, and that's going to be tough, because the guys you'd replace all bring something to the table. Forbert is a shot blocker and PK specialist. Gryz clearly drives quick transition and possession. Cliffy is our 2nd best hitter on the team, and provides needed edge and physicality, having a breakout year. That's going to be a tough group to crack. So my question would be, who is out there for depth/bottom half replacements that we aren't discussing because we're drooling over Horvat? I've heard the Luke Schenn talk but not much else

Marchand-Bergy-Debrusk Zacha-DK-Pasta Freddy-Coyle-Hall Greer-Nosek-Foligno
Places to upgrade --
3rd line winger to bump Freddy down. Must play a heavy game to fit Coyle and Hall
4th line C to upgrade Nosek
4th line winger to upgrade Greer
Veteran Center like Toews, and upgrade 3W --- match with Hall to create a new 3rd line and our current 3rd line can become 4th line (Freddy-Coyle-Foligno)
Defense:
McAvoy Gryz Lindholm Carlo Cliffy Forbert
Zboril Reilly Achan
I keep forgetting we have Reilly! Which actually makes me somewhat less concerned
- Upgrade ---- big physical defensemen. Carlo insurance. Zboril yips insurance.
I honestly see no reason why we'd end up trading Lysell, Lohrei, or our 1st round pick for those needs. The reality is that the home run fantasy trades people want are way more complicated than they seem because there's no way they happen without shipping out at least one significant current roster piece. We DO NOT have the cap space to add to this group without subtracting. Nobody wants to trade us Toews/Horvat and get back Smith, Reilly, Nosek, and Greer and 2 3rds. Although that seems to be what the fans are dreaming of. Cap space in = Cap space out for the most part.

Names that look interesting
Debrincat - rental winger, upgrade for 2nd line, trickles down, probably can't afford to keep him?
Dylan Larkin -- hasn't resigned in Detroit. A less sexy Horvat. Maybe willing to play 3C on a team going for the cup and then top 6 C, Bergy-esque leadership replacement
Timo Meir --- big swing at an offensive up grade for the top 6, similar to Debricat but a bigger body
Max Domi - seems to bounce around a ton which worries me, but has some offense and some sandpaper for a third line upgrade?
Shane Ghost-bear or whatever -- is he any good anymore? Big, mobile, rotting away in the desert
JVR - seems like a playoff kind of guy who never gets to play in the playoffs. A third line up grade that can play up the line-up and pot goals on the doorstep
Parise - playing for peanuts, producing at almost .5 ppg, veteran, scrappy, leader. Seems like good depth and you don't have to roster him every night
Okposo - on the decline but always liked his game. solid veteran 3rd liner at this point, maybe 4th line for a playoff run as a rental? Maybe Buffalo wants to cut us another deal
Acciari - love the idea personally. Heard it somewhere else. Didn't realize St. Louis was that bad this year.
Krug - If St. Louis is that bad this year, maybe they'd send us Krug for Gryz and a 3rd?
Ryan O'Reilly -- Sticking with the St. Louis theme. Love the player, seems to be having a real shite season
Lucic - because it's Looch, and if Krug's coming back then Lucic is coming back too

I've heard the Luke Schenn talk but not much else I think the first bold is problematic, and it sets up the rest of the post. I agree "fan perspective' from all intents and purposes is irrelevant, but that wasn't what I was implying. The implication is that deadline deals regularly have huge impacts. The reality is, it's just not always, or even maybe usually, the big name deals. again, right now it appears zero should be screwed with. but if I'm the GM, I'm doing a list of areas where we could improve. that list doesn't simply factor in god given talent either, but a combination of everything hockey, plus the common sense notion that anything more than a tweak, will probably have serious downsides. An exxagerated example would be 5 Horvats, all affordable and all available. Horvat is a better player than our 5 worst, but it's too dramatic a change. It obviously takes pretty good players a while to acclimate too. Kaberle couldn't do it for a short run. Hampus looked good , but he's much better now. Charlie Coyle, imo, played his most impressive hockey to date, after being plucked at the deadline. Jagr didn't. Having said all that, I think there are several Bruins that you'd have to consider moving, if you're all in. Up front, Frederic could be a big piece. If he scores 25, can you afford to bring him back. Will he entice a Vancouver to eat more salary, and build from? What about Hall? I think Coyle has to be considered. Grizz isn't built for playoffs imo. I think there are a lot of teams that would love to have him. Smith and Reilly, of course. I don't think it would be tough to improve upon Foligno. I think we're confused because he's so much better than he was, but there are some 4 million players out there..... Appears Nick is kind of a co-captain though, so it isn't probable he'd go, and for me, it would have to be a huge upgrade. Players like Nick will ramp up their compete in playoffs. Nosek, Greer, Zboril. They can certainly be upgraded. I'm thinking, as a general statement, you probably don't want to upend your playing roster by any more than 3, but there are certainly 3 areas that have plenty of room for improvement. You probably have to be in on 10 or 15 deals, to even get a crack at 2. Again...and this can't be overstated. It sure looks like nothing is needed. I'm just happy to learn the Bruins are exploring, and they're doing it with a vengeance.

But I think that's all speculation based on the fact that Vancouver refuses to let anyone talk to his agent. The consensus, given that the Canucks would be more likely to get a good return from a team that is certain of resigning him, is that he has no intention of resigning with anyone and the Canucks don't want teams to know it.

Although that seems to be what the fans are dreaming of. Cap space in = Cap space out for the most part. Toews has 2 more points than Coyle. 32 Turds was saying earlier this week that market on Toews is a 3rd...thought that assumes you aren't paying a premium for someone to eat some salary to fit his massive cap hit. Chicago might actually be a possible partner for Reilly depending on what they do at the deadline. They have some depth defenseman that might be attractive to teams even though they have term. If Chicago moves them, they'll need someone to play out the string and likely to play next year as well. And Cap Space won't be an issue with Kane and Toews off the book. I think one strand of this web is who isn't likely to come back for the Bruins anyway? Two guys come to mind. Cliffy and Freddy. Cliffy has more than played his way out of the market, and he's a pending UFA. You might be able to get a veteran who is an upgrade on Cliffy who costs too much to re-sign from a team that wants to sign Cliffy now before he gets to market (If he will). And Freddy. Freddy has a shot at a 20 goal season. He could go 20-20-40 (I'd say maybe a 20% chance), and then he's a very valuable chip to teams that need some snarl that also has proven scoring ability. Blake Coleman, Barclay Goodrow...that's the mould his agent will cook up. So a $4M player - hopefully one with a ring. Freddy s RFA, so they have some leverage, but if you're going to upgrade, and there's a partner out there who likes the idea of their own Blake Coleman type player, he may be a chip you can play to upgrade. If you really did want to get in on DeBrincat, I think Ottawa would love to have him as a much less skilled version of Tkachuk to carry that kind of attitude through their forward group.

I love the idea of them getting Toews and I can't help but think JT would approve of a chance to go after a 4th ring in Boston, but if you acquire him on deadline day, you will have to have $2.328M in real dollars available to cover his salary for the remainder of the year, or $1.164M if the Hawks eat the max salary. Tough to imagine it happening unless Smith is gone at minimum (trading Smith away for no salary assets would save $687K at the deadline). The Bruins are actually projecting to have $2.325M available to them at the deadline on CapFriendly, and that will include projecting to keep both Koppanen and Nosferatu for the remainder of the season - and they won't. So I guess they could think about JT. And if that number is kosher, it also means they have the space for Horsefat without moving significant other pieces - but they won't also be able to get D insurance. I might be OK with that, though if they go into the playoffs healthy and Zboril and Reilly are available. I still like my Jeff Carter idea, but it depends on Pitt taking on water and the Sabres pushing them out of contention...though right now, it looks like the Caps are more vulnerable.

Gudbranson's on a 4 year deal at $4M per. I don't know about that. I thought I heard that they wanted an LD if they added D? In which case, maybe they're looking at Gavrikov, though he seems like this year's UFA defenseman everyone is talking about who isn't really as good as they hype. Have to figure the Yzerman deals Maatta and that old pal Tinordi might be available, too. Pickens are Slim.

Comes with the job…. Donnie knows that he needs to ice the best team possible to win 16 games in the playoffs…. Yeah...but don't solve yesterday's problem at the expense of today's roster. With the way Forbort and Cliffy are playing, I think they can protect playoff Grz a lot easier than in the past, and I do think Montgomery is going to play the living shit out of Charlie, Hamster and Carlo. I think the solution to secondary scoring is already in play and you are significantly less likely to improve it than screw it up (depth for injury replacements notwithstanding). To go back to Steve's post - I agree that it's good to hear they aren't sitting on their laurels. So many good reasons to be in every conversation. One is the worry the shit out of the teams trying to catch you already. If you improve 1% for every 2% they improve, and they're already 10% behind, now they have to improve 20% just to to pull even, and that's almost impossible. And if you do manage to snag one of the nicer depth pieces, that's now an option off the table for everyone else, even if he's on your fringe. And if you get Horvat without giving from the current roster? No one else does. He isn't going to make Carolina or Toronto better. Or Tampax. But I don't think they have the pressure of needing to make a move. They should be there should a McDonagh and J.T. Miller for two B prospects and a few picks come on the table, but they don't have to pay a Rick Nash price because there's a whole that has to be plugged or else!

None of it will happen if Sweeney can't free up space. That's why I like Staal on top of I think he has something to offer. He's on a $750K deal which will be owed very at deadline time.

"damned if you do, damned if you don't" strongly implies the best plan is sitting on your hands, every time. but if it's all on the flip of a coin, reality screams otherwise. you have to go with what you feel is best. you're going down soon enough. don't wanna do that on someone elses terms.

"damned if you do, damned if you don't" strongly implies the best plan is sitting on your hands, every time. but if it's all on the flip of a coin, reality screams otherwise. you have to go with what you feel is best. you're going down soon enough. don't wanna do that on someone elses terms. I think that making a choice to do nothing is still an active choice. Doing nothing by the way of failing to do something and then not succeeding us a compound fail in my book. This is my thought process.. If we fall short of the cup and DS made moves I think, the debate would be at least he tried vs didn't do enough or do the right thing. If we fall short and DS did nothing, I think the general opinion would be why didn't he improve the team... We know the playoffs are a grind and a whole different animal AND there is all that window closing talk. To me, doing nothing would be the wrong move. Granite you can do the wrong something easy enough too. That typo was for OC...

I like a guy like Cizikis as a 4th line center option. He is quicker than NOsek and more of a pest on the forecheck. He also hits more and is good with puck possession and was part of the best 4th line in hockey for a while. I think this would be an upgrade over NOsek and a reasonable snag.
