For a while I was New Dan, but it didn't sell well so I went to Dan Classic, which really was the original version. It was what the public wanted..

Speaking of centers has anyone heard about this Georgii Merkulov...AHL Rookie Team, 55 point season in Providence..23..Led NCAA freshmen in goals with Ohio State...maybe he can be the next big young center...? "big" 5'10" and a buck 63. GOAT would lose his noodles. Would rather a player with a big game then one w a big frame.

Maybe he gets the chance to shoe he can do it at the pace of the NHL. Sounds like he also added about 15lbs in the last year or so.

Nhl.com thinks Lysell and Lohrei arrive this year. interesting as everything Ive read says Murky is closer Whats your view on Brown? He's a 31 yr old journeyman. So you know what you're getting. He'll play hard, but he gets exposed. He did in both Philky and Ottawa. Neither roster had room for him. He's the most puzzling signing this offseason.

But a lot depends on the Geek, cuz I cant see any of Zacha/Coyle/Merk playing fourth line C. So Geek would have to get demoted (to 4th line) opening a spot in the top 9 for Merk.

Guess he could play wing with Freddy and Coyle. Doesnt help us at C though.

Ill hop on most things Danny throws out. But there have obviously been things from him Ive pretended I didnt see. I remember ripping Rask to pieces one time and touting the rookie goalie Svedberg after seeing him Dec, 2014 at Staples (made 33 saves, gave up one 1 goal and there was EN in 2-0 loss)....Play Svedberg more and then the kid liked dropped out of sight...there was this Czech kid playing that night...some "Pastrah-nak" or something like that. He had like 4 shots on goal, and impressed me so much. He had zero career goals and it was his 4th game in the NHL...Pasta becomes 60-goal scorer. Svedberg threw 2 shutouts that year as backup and also had a few bad games--5 v. Habs and 3 and pulled v. Dallas...he never saw the NHL ever again after that 14-15 season. Who knew?

Kid played a total of 19 games over two season (1 then 18) and finished his NHL career with a s% just under .920 and GAA of about 2.28. That's basically Swayman's year last year. So if anyone says a rookie goalie put up great numbers so we should trade the vet because why have two great goalies, summon up Niklas Svedberg from memory on the point of sample size. Not only never played in the NHL again, he only played another 44 games in North America. Came back after two years in the K to be the goalie for the Iowa Wild. Went .500 over 44 games (2.87 and .905) and then went to Sweden. Still plays in Germany apparently as a backup.

I doubt they start Merkulov at centre when he comes up. I could see Freddy getting a shot at C before they turn to Merkulov just for the defensive end of the ice and not getting out-muscled on inside ice. And here's the issue for me on the eye test at the junior or AHL level in a nutshell - people thought Jack Studnicka was going to be the solution at C. I saw him play in junior; people who saw him play in the AHL raved about him. His numbers in his rookie season were fractions off of Merkulov. Both of them couldn't touch Frankie Vatrano's numbers. It is generally true that it's far better that these guys look good in development leagues than not, that they put up good numbers and get rave reviews from those who watch them play. But the jump is huge, and one of the hardest things to evaluate, in my mind, is how a player will do at the next level. Some guys just have to acclimate. Other guys can't, or can't quickly enough. I love watching the process, but I remain a skeptic on any individual player.

Merk was very good in his freshman/only season at Ohio State, and he was very good for the PBruins last year. Not sure if he'll start with the team (probably wont) but hes got 2 years on Lysell. If they need someone at some ponint for a top 9 role (temporarily) hes a good candidate to get the call. As I envision this happening (again , even if its just for a short spell) - I find it likely we'll see him at some point. If its a 4th line forward needed - I would guess Beecher would get that call up. I like Merkulov because he's fast, can score, and has found success everywhere he went. And most importantly - cuz Danny like him. But annointing him any kind of answer or future NHL mainstay I am not. Because I am also skeptical of em all (like you). But someone has to get called up at some point, and Merk is intriguing.
