Sophia...A.. I wanted to give her a "F" but she has really come on as of late. I was very upset by the losses of Heidi Watney and Jenny Dell, but they hardly got any air time compared to Sophia.

I’ve reamed Donnie over the years, especially when he fired Cassidy. Seems he knows what he is doing.

And I think it's been fair to ream him, too, for some of the decisions. But where I give him full marks is in setting a goal and finding a way to get there that might not be the conventional path, and maybe even more, keeping his eye on the vision of what this team has been for the last two decades (or close to). I give PC a lot of credit for what they are now, and Sweeney's successes have a similar character. To be a little more concrete...signing Backes, trading for various Ritchies, acquiring Lindholm, getting Craig Smith, drafting Frederic...all these moves are about getting bigger up front in order to score in the playoffs. Pastrnak, Marchand, Bergeron, Krejci were all huge talents but none of them was over 200lbs. The need to bulk up has been pretty clear since the two years they missed the playoffs when they had a few guys with size but no talent and a bunch of guys with talent but not enough size to continue to play the Julien style of meatgrinder hockey. The latest group of acquisitions has hit the right note so far in terms of having both size and skills. I would even go back to the first Krejci retirement when Sweeney signed every LW on the market. Most people hated it as a strategy, but all they did was go on a huge run in the second half and come within a hair's breadth of beating Carolina. Then he traded Erik Haula straight up for a former 6th overall pick who is younger, bigger and better than Haula. People hated the Foligno signing and it wasn't great that first year when his back was still less than 100%, but three years later Chicago is going to give him over $10M for another 3 years, and all he did was play big role in stabilizing the development of some key younger players like Debrusk and Frederic as well as score at a pretty good clip for a guy playing 4th line TOI. He has generally done a solid job of plugging in players who are adept at playing Bruins hockey (that first quarter of the season without DK notwithstanding - yuck). Getting Ullmark when they probably knew better than we did the likelihood of Tuukka getting back to form. Getting Pooter and Lohrei with late second rounders (and remember Lohrei was going through the draft for the second time). All of this is the main reason I'm so disappointed in the way they pushed in all the chips. Guys like Bertuzzi and Orlov were available for a reason, and part of that reason - from my observations before and since - is that neither guy is really good at tailoring his game to "the system" wherever he plays. Both are good enough to do good things for you if you give them a chance, but they aren't going to do them in a constrained environment where the first expectation is that you are where you're supposed to be to support your teammates and maintain the D structure. I think OC recently brought up that the Bertuzzi acquisition was probably driven concern Hall wasn't going to be back in time for the playoffs, so I can't blame them too much. But that's the one time I thought they lost that main thread. One of the most interesting questions I'm starting to hear now is whether the Bruins are going to try to trade for Lindholm or if they think he's likely to go to another team as a rental only and they can get him in July for nothing more than cash. I could see that being consistent with the way Sweeney has worked of late. If the cost to get Lindholm is yet another first rounder or a player like Freddy or DeBrusk, he might not be enough of an improvement to be worth the disruption. |

For a winger to be third in points and third in goals when the best centres on the team are Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha speaks volumes. He's behind Kucherov, also a RW, but a guy who plays with Point and Stamkos as Cs, and MacKinnon who is a C. Coyle - Agree. Frederic - Agree. He's playing with a consistency to his energy level that I don't think we've seen. He seems convinced that he knows what he is as an NHL player now. Marchand - I'll throw a minus on there. A-. We haven't seen quite the same level of Marchand's creativity and that's to be expected with no Bergeron, but it's still step down. JVR - he's been surprisingly good on the rush, and I think it's a bit of a misconception that he's ONLY good a foot from the crease. He's not a great 2-way player, but he's safe in the offensive end. I don't recall many high risk mistakes. DeBrusk - B+. He's had games where he didn't score but he was one of their best players because he was so good and so disruptive on the back check and in the zone. He's become a really solid PK guy. Basically, he's now got an answer to the Cassidy question "what good are you if you're not scoring". And his scoring - always a bit streaky - is starting to kick in to the point where I think he will finish with 25 goals. Geekie - thrust into the top six, he's scored like a top six player and hasn't looked out of place. FOs haven't been anywhere near good enough though. B+ Pooter - C+. He's getting tagged with some big hits because he's getting predictable, and learning how quickly the NHL will take things away. I see him the same way I saw Segzy in his rookie year. I don't expect him to start in the playoffs, but I do expect him to draw in and potentially make some good contributions. Lauko - C. He is what he is. Think he's found his ceiling. Steen - D+. Same as Lauko, but less effective at it. Brown - Fuck off. Boqvist - D. He's had some good games, but it's not sustainable to put him higher in the lineup. Decent veteran JAG. |

I didn't except the doom and gloom of many this season, since most of the team was back and last year's team was the best ever. Yeah, Bergie and DK were gone, but 7/9 top scorers were back, as was the D and G, and they brought in some interesting players. I was thinking top 5-10 and in contention. So first overall is definitely exceeding expectations. Without giving letter grades, some thoughts:
Coyle - I didn't know he had it in him. He really is playing high level hockey, consistently. The elevation in his game from 20-goal, 40-point guy to a 30/60+ type player is one of the biggest reasons they are where they are.
Zacha - He has Krejci Syndrome in that he's boring. But he is good and plays both ends of the rink well. Not gonna dazzle you or put up massive numbers, but he is good.
JVR - wow, talk about delivering with best case scenario results. Maybe even better bang for buck than PB and DK last year, without the penalty down the road.
Geekie - again best case scenario where you see a guy excelling in a small role and hope that projects the same with more minutes.
Swayman, Carlo - these guys are hitting the prime of their careers, and we're seeing the results
Pooter - the story early, his role has been greatly reduced and I don't like that. That said, he's hurt his shoulder 3 times now and you can't argue with the results they've gotten from going with a bigger lineup. He's the future though, and takes away pressure to find a long-term C option. Reminds me of a young Adam Oates.
Beecher - He should be playing. Was the top FO guy. I don't know what's up there, the other options haven't been better.
LoLo - His skating reminds me of Scott Niedermeyer, his puck skills are great and he's 6'5". A bit frustrating watching him in Prov with Gryz in the lineup. Future #1 or 2D.
Pasta - it's weird how even in Bruins Nation many don't seem to realize just how good this guy is. Most goals in the League since the start of last season. Literally the top goal scorer in the NHL, playing for our team.

The JVR vs Bert move is kinda stunning alone. And I was begging for them to make room to bring Bert back. I know right? I mean i was ok with bringing back Bert at the right price but was not disappointed when Sweeney didn't pay him what he wanted. I've watched enough of Bertuzzi from the start of his career that despite a not bad playoff for the B's he wasn't worth a long term expensive contract. |

I find the D complicated but need some different scale to grade the goalies. A+ as a tandem? When I say complicated for the D, I think McAvoy has been awful for stretches and looked like a young Drew Doughty again for others. Lindholm has had his offensive contributions disappear, so he seems to have doubled down on his D game and now the offense is starting to come back (thanks, danny - he's been great in Fantasy!). FoBo is INC due to injury, Shattnerkirk isn't able to play the Bruins system consistently and age has taken a toll on his skating, but he has the mind of a PMD and the experience not to get too scared of mistakes. Mitchell is gone - that's good. Wotherspoon gets a lot of love because he is embracing the "play the tough to get noticed!" card and objects to everything all the time, but he's still a mistake factory. Grz is having easily his worst season, but he also has a bit of your Krejci syndrome issue in that the things he does well are boring. I was watching the Flyers game with an eye to tracking the good in his game and there was a lot of just moving the puck along quickly and to the right guy. And Lohrei is still a question for me. He reminds me of a young Doughy Hamilton. But less Doughy. Lots of rover in him and the challenge is for him to tap into that instinct at the right time but to always be working within the team structure. Think there's a learning curve there and sending him down is a good way to let him learn without the harsh spotlight on the consequences of mistakes. On Pooter as a young Oates - yeah, there's some of that, isn't there? One of the things Oates did so well throughout his career was create short passes rather than try to make long ones, and I see a lot of that in Pooter's game. Guys converge and blip! the puck's through to the tape of a Bruin before the can close him off. Oates, of course, was 23 by the time he made the show and 27 by the time he was an impact player. Well, 26. I always forget he was a key part of Yzerman joining the 150 club. I think people undervalue Pastrnak because he's the anti MacKinnon/Toews. 32 Turd interviewed MacKinnon and called him heir to Toews's title as captain serious while Pastrnak's the heir to Shaggy's title as the guy most likely to get into adventures with Scooby Doo. So much in Pastrnak's game has always looked loose and made up on the fly, but the one thing I think you see a lot more often since Montgomery took over is just how much more often Pasta's forays carve into the D rather than float through it. He still attacks in odd ways compared to what you expect, and that new shoot-it-from-behind-your-hip shot is wild, but everything just seems a little more solid. He still never met a high risk play he didn't like, but what are you going to do? Bench him? |

It's kind of interesting on a couple of fronts. One is because Bertuzzi is having a shit season and has fallen out of favour with Keefe. The other is that it looks like papering over the loss of one potential impact player with a bunch of JAGs until you add the numbers. Consider that in 2020-21, Krejci had 44 points in 51 games. No one liked the Haula signing for $2M (vs. DK's $7M), but Haula came back with the same number of points, just in 78 games. They got another 46 from Nosek, Lazar and Foligno for about the same total they paid DK. You're always going to get more from more guys unless the one guy was McDavid or something, and maybe even then. But the Krejci example was twice as many points; this is 4 times as many. That gets even more surprising when you think the Krejci example should probably use a full-season projection for DK equivalency - something like 70 points in 82 games. |
