That's more or less it. I don't, however, extend this to JT Superstar and the 0-0-0. He should have made the call. Then you would’ve hammered JT Superstar for not being able to suck it up and play…. At the time? No, I wouldn't have. Because he was embarrassingly bad in his attempt to play, essentially getting dominated by Koivu. I think even a defensive C who could have clamped down on Koivu - even if he also went the full Thornton - might have been enough to make a difference in the outcome. And then with some rest and healing, a healthy Thornton might well have come back and led that team deeper in the playoffs, and maybe I wouldn't be hating on him for the next 20 years. I wanted Thornton to take that next step from elite passer to dominant, generational player as much as any Bruins fan. That was then. Frankly, I would have benched his ass whether he said he was good to go or not. I'd have benched any player on that team who not only failed to register a point, but who won just 44% of his faceoffs, took the most PIM on the team and who had the worst +/-. I mean, that stat line should send you to popcorn row whether you're injured or not, right? But Bonehead Sullivan played him 21:30. Plenty of blame to go around on that one.

"A beluga out of water", nice way to put it.
I'd like to say I'm totally with you on this one; however, all this "we're brothers, best buddies, bff" talk about the relationship between the two Bruins goalies makes me think "why the heck didn't Ullmark admit he wasn't 100%?" I’m going to say this from personal experience as well as knowing others who played at a high level… sometimes coaches don’t wanna hear you aren’t 100% and sometimes they hold it against you. This is a real thing. I believe the hardest job a coach has is to make the hard decisions both for the player (goaltender) and the club. The fact is, the goalie is expected to say, “I’m good, I want to play every game” whether it’s true or not. And it’s the coach’s job to say, “I’ve watched you all year.. you aren’t moving right… I’m making a change.” Especially in a case when a capable 1a was available. I’m sorry, but that series loss is on Monty. Monty is to blame for the fiasco, but make it clear it is not solely on the goalies. Looking backward, goaltending is not up to the goaltending coach as proposed by those who have "inside" knowledge. It is a team game period. Floating along presently in a world of Monty whereby the Bs are bipolar, one has to think he has a flaw in his coaching beyond goalies. Games lost or tied in the last 5 minutes does not speak to the stats that the Bs are defensively one of the best. His system of activating defense with short passes through the neutral zone is not connecting to the talent of the team in those crucial times. In other words, it is a sound system until the forecheck and aggressive play by the opponent becomes more perceptible. Don't get me wrong on his acumen on being a coach, I just don't view his ability to adjust beyond his system. He simply has no real solution to an aggressive forecheck when the game is on the line. It is not the goalie. As for the relationship of the two goalies. Yeah, I am in the old school of tough love. Trade the mofo for a true potential young center if DS can! That said, it must be recognize though that goalies hinge on how the team plays in front of them. So if it ain't broken, and these two goalies can pull off a constant excellence in goaltending then why not just chalk it up to as a positive investment wise. The so called teary eye commentary is border line, we are fans want commonality and tribalism, but we simply diminish it to economics when it gets to be out of the comfort zone. Let it be. WTF, Bergeron was underpaid his last contract. Marchand's contract as well. And I think Pasta is a contract that lets the Bs find a center financially in the interim to fulfill the need of the team. So, are they not also being teary eyed about the Bs. It can be done with two solid goalies given the growth of the Cap in the inflated years ahead. On a different level, the last ten games of the schedule always is a true indicator of playoff performance. Gear it up. It is a long schedule, I always hope for the best. Monty needs to grow as a coach still remains the factor though.

"Say you reward Heinen with $2M next year and settle on $5.5M with JDB. That's $8M total, so you still have $5.7M to carry a depth forward and a depth D. There's zero pressure there...IF this year's roster proves it can win a couple of rounds. If they flame out in round one or get schooled in round two, then you need cash for a #1C and that means you need the $4M delta between Ullmark and Bussi to pay him. But otherwise, you don't necessarily need to spend big money. They aren't at risk of losing anyone who is key to their current situation."
After the Blues game last night and the Islanders blow out says you don't keep, "a pretty good Heinen". Reward Heinen for what ?
No you take the draft picks for Ullmark. Then take Heinens space, empty, with Ullmarks cap hit gone and start planning for Brad Marchands eventual departure.
Everything points to Ullmarks departure. If Heinen weren't so vanilla I'd keep him for the 4th line. But you can plug Kantar in to do that job.

www.nhl.com/news/topic/nhl-insider/linus-ullmark-happy-to-remain-with-bruins-after-trade-deadline
This is the link to the story. Fiberglassmask's link doesn't work.
But I don't care how teary, etc., Ullmark was/is.
He screwed up big time last spring. If you're not 100%, you need to tell your coach, period. He's a goalie, FFS. If he cannot move properly because of an injury or whatever it was, he has to let his "buddy" Swayman take over. But he didn't. That was selfish as fuck. How genuine is this guy?
His crocodile tears certainly aren't fooling me.
You're WAYYYY fucking off on this! If Ullmark has "any" competitive juices at all he'd saying he's good to go! It's completely up to the medical staff & coaches to decide whether or not he actually is! He's wasn't just an ordinary goalie. He was a Vezina candidate FFS. What did you want him to do? IF Linus would've pulled himself out of the series! How could he be designated to be the backup? I bet you put of all the games I've played in my life. I may have been 100% for maybe 30%! I never got paid much in my life to play, but I played where I needed c-shots, busted shoulders, knees black & blue from the puck hitting me on the inside of the pads, because the pads were designed differently & because of the style I played that was all exposed. The highest level I played was senior level, but fuck I remember needing my teammates to put my arm pads on for me because I could barely move my shoulders to get them on. Once the game started & the adrenaline kicked in. That helped, but I was only the starter playing on a rep team. Imagine playing in the Stanley Cup Playoff! Who knows when it's your last game or not? You RARELY allow the player to decide if he's good to go, because if he's any kind of hockey player 99% of the time he should say. "PUT ME IN COACH! IM READY TO PLAY!" You're talking out of your ass on this one just like you do about Pasta! Nope, my dear exclamation point promoter.
I am not talking out of my ass, and I don't care much for your language. (But I'm not going to lower my standards. To each his own. If that's all you've got...)
But back to topic:
I think there's no "I" in "team". Maybe I'm too idealistic, but I SIMPLY WANT TO WIN.
I didn't care if they had to put in another guy at short or second (usually my positions) if it made sense. And even after a few years as a kid in youth soccer I realized that sometimes my ego could get in the way. (However, I was a pretty good soccer player, and the coaches rarely had better options available.)
I found Ullmark's behavior immature and selfish, and I stand by that assessment.
(BTW: I didn't need a single exclamation point to create this post...)

About sixty years ago they would have called you a pussy if you needed to don a fiberglassmask to play goal.
I simply don't trust Ullmark to not put himself ahead of the team. And I simply don't trust Montgomery as a coach either.

This is true for all professional athletes. Former Sox JD Drew was a heckuva player but he got out of the lineup a lot due to one ailment, injury after another and he "drew" a reputation for being soft. When Clemens was taken out due to blister in the 86 game 6, there was a lot of debate about did he ask out or did McNamara simply pull him out...and then Pedro in 03, he kept going because Grady kept telling him one more batter, or didn't trust the bullpen...The players who want to play, play and go for it and whether it's bravado or what--ask Bergeron with broken ribs, and others with terrible injuries that they kept going in NHL playoffs and others who couldn't keep up their performance (Jumbo Joe in 04) due to injury...Bottom line, coach and medical staff have to step in and make decisions. If it's up to the player, most will play and a few may beg out. And I know that Bergeron was a warrior but he had no business returning with the B's up 3-1 in that Florida series--but the athlete in him said let's go! And it's up to the coach to say "let's not yet." Bergeron came back and won 69% of his faceoffs and scored a PPG in game 5. If Ullmark doesn't give that one away, no one is questioning anything about the Captain coming back. Still think it changed the lineup dynamic, one center moved to wing, jumbled a line or two...and this is not on Bergie..but it almost seemed like several players thought "oh thank christ, we got Captain back" and then just laid back and stopped playing like they had to take a 3-1 games lead.

I think it's a mixture - a coach being too soft or weak or indecisive (they should have given him the "Hamlet Award" instead of the Adams), a goalie being too eager to play, a centerman/team captain being too eager to come back from a bad injury. Danny is right that a case can be made that the team didn't need Bergie, after they had won both road games without him. And yes, Ullmark & "old reliable" Matt Graesslich screwed up big time in game 5.

No it's all over questioning a guys character & Mr. Hurlot seems to have a very piss poor judge of it! Pasta, Ullmark & Bergeron! All great Bruins, great players! What NHL coach who's worth his salt would've NOT put Bergy back in the lineup? Ullmark felt he was ok to play! He wasn't! That doesn't make him selfish AT ALL! It makes him a competitor, a leader & someone who won't allow himself to sit out games for every little thing! I think it was a mistake to play Ullmark for all 6 games! You went tandem all season. Expecting Swayman to come in for game 7 after sitting for 10 straight days & play his best was ridiculous! That has NOTHING to do with Ullmark's character. Then the way he beaks off on the Bruins best bonafide goal scorer since Neely is someone who bitches just to bitch! Everytime the guy types something about these guys character I'm calling him out on it! He should have toilet paper near him at all times to wipe the shit off the screen! He doesn't have a fucking clue about any of these guys character at all!

Find a center, next find a LD, or the "precious" draft picks then if all fails keep Ullmark during the season. Ullmark may falter next year diminishing his value the TDL, but dems da brakes. Unless a 1st line center is involved, or a top notch LD then status quo ante 2022-2023. I would keep Debrusk at a reasonable price, or just walk away Renee.
