"The Damned Utd"? Yes, fine flick, great performance by Michael Sheen. I wonder if they will ever make a movie about Shankly - who's good enough to play him? Jim Broadbent?Yes. Ray Winstone, maybe? Naw. Save him for Steve Bruce. You'll need somebody with a really thick Scottish accent to play the role of Shankly. Unfortunately, the Scottish actor who would make a terrific Shankly (and who also once had an offer from Man United manager Sir Matt Busby to become a professional footballer), Sir Sean Connery, is way too old now (and retired). Maybe Sir Anthony Hopkins (who's Welsh), if he can master the accent. I once saw him perform a terrific Brando impression...

Folks might also enjoy the documentary "Once In A Lifetime:The Extraordinary Story Of The New York Cosmos." The subheading reads "Goals. Greed. Girls. And That's Just The First Half...That football club of Ghinalia, Pele, Carlos Alberto, Franz Beckenbauer were serious chick hounds. I saw them play here in Toronto vs the Toronto Metro-Croatia years ago. The full movie is available on youtube. Didn't know this one - thanks a lot, RHO! R.I.P. Giorgio Chinaglia

You likely can't definitely say you won't watch something tomorrow , let alone 7 yrs from now.

This time FIFA has definitely gone too far (BTW: I won't watch the 2018 World Cup either).

Is this just a FIFA boycott on your part, or you've just lost interest in soccer in general?

Is this just a FIFA boycott on your part, or you've just lost interest in soccer in general? It's probably all of the above, and it didn't just happen overnight. The corruption in FIFA, the things (potential) host countries do to get one of the events (and during the tournaments), the watered-down champions league bs, hooliganism, etc.

Too bad, i understand the reasons behind it, but you're missing some real good soccer. WC's, Euros, are tourneys i can't miss, BPL i can take or leave and the Champions league , i'll watch the final games but not the run off, like you say its watered down, but the best teams are usually the last ones standing at the semi final stages.

I started cutting down my dosage of soccer in the early 90's, and although I know I will miss some good stuff, I have suffered through way too many crappy games (IMHO scoreless ties are simply unbearable) to regret what I'm doing. I like to watch the highlights after some games, but in general I really don't care that much anymore. Reading about the corruption in FIFA (I recommend "Foul!: the Secret World of FIFA" by Andrew Jennings, unfortunately this book is virtually out of print, and I gave my hardcover version to a friend who back then didn't want to believe that FIFA was really just a bunch of dirty old crooks...) only strengthened my resolve to focus on other things, and maybe spend not so much time watching tv.

I tried to watch "United Passions", a movie made and paid for by FIFA about its own history, last night - I tried to, but I gave up after about 40 minutes. It's a shameless propaganda movie glossing over corruption, bribes, etc., but unfortunately it's not even bad enough to be funny. FIFA cast three former star actors (Gerard Depardieu, Sam Neill & Tim Roth) as Jules Rimet, Joao Havelange and Sepp Blatter, respectively (yes, handsome Tim Roth, "Mr. Orange" in "Reservoir Dogs", as "Septic Bladder"!), whose careers might never recover from appearing in this piece of dreck. BTW: on its opening weekend "United Passions" grossed only $918 in the USA, making it one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.

Billy crystal might have been a better choice to play Blatter!

I don't know what Billy Crystal looks like today (probably approaching a Blatter-like hairline by now), but I would have gone with one of these actors:

Oh yes! And he already has the "...and the winner is 'QATAR'!" smile down pat! Seriously, I think they had a hard time finding actors who were willing to appear in such an obvious piece of propaganda.

R.I.P. Johan Cruyff #14
R.I.P. Dutch Master. Too bad he and his "total football" Dutch national team couldn't beat the Germans in 1974 - it would have been his crowning moment.
