I need something new. Something raw and greasy and dark - could be anywhere in that world from a Mingus to Dead Weather but I'm not in the mood for pretty melodies and clean guitar.
Gauntlet...

How about Sammy Lewis with Willie Johnson on guitar? I'm pretty sure Ike Turner is on this cut as a piano player. There's a younger blues guy, Big John Atkinson who is obsessed with these sides. His band got it down...too well, honestly. youtu.be/2j8ccJkdb88

Nice. I need to hear it on something better than my phone, though. I'll do some digging.
Thanks.

Nice. I need to hear it on something better than my phone, though. I'll do some digging. Thanks. John Lee Hooker's sides on VeeJay are some of the most low down blues ever. There's one song "Time is Marching" with Eddie Taylor on 2nd guitar and Jimmy Reed on harmonica, I'll never forget it. Lightnin' Slim with Whispering Smith at Montreaux...the blues are one speed-slow. After he does "You Got Me Dizzy" they do three slow blues in a row. Great shit. m.youtube.com/watch?v=q-JY6ang0wU

It took me about a year of listening to this song to realize it's about a prostitute. youtu.be/b-QyzQvNfGM

Now here's a song for the women's movement: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4jGgEoN-MQSome low down shit from Lightnin' Hopkins: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr8QCAwD_CoThey put him on Austin City Limits, and someone let him on stage with a wah-wah pedal, a critical error. But Lightnin Hopkins is best playing really simple and primitive music. That solo has some of the best timing I've ever heard. Pretty aggresive angle for his hat, as well.

I find a lot of great stuff like this on a site called thehound.net The Hound was the name of a deejay in NJ who used to have a weekly Saturday radio show. He played rock and roll/rockabilly/surf music and some blues. So much of the music back then sounded similar and faded into obscurity; however the size of the recording business at that time makes today's music industry look like a postage stamp. They run a lot of funny old commercials, too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twz3aGCeg5EHow else can somebody find out about Roy "Boogie Boy" Perkins?

I'll be at the Dead and Co show at Fenway on Friday night. Wifey was a bigger GD fan than me, but it should be fun.
I don't like John Mayer at all, but keep reading that he's been very good playing GD (instead of his own crappy music).

I liked his singer songwriter phase where he was like a James Taylor that played with a full band. The Blues stuff was plain terrible, like he took the worst of Stevie Ray (I can tell "Soul to Soul" is his favorite SRV record from that phase) and playing with the Dead is another odd turn, if you can consider three careers built into about 12 years as odd...

Never considered him. Then I saw him do purple rain on a Howard stern show. He's talented.

Listening to my favorite modern country singer, Jamey Johnson. He's more known for writing songs, he wrote "Honkey Tonk Badonkadonk" and George Strait's "Give it Away" but his solo stuff really understands the tradition. He reminds me of a country music Nick Curran. A true "alcoholic" timbre of voice, that really works for this music. The country guys used to be pretty badass. Now they wear tight jeans and makeup. What the fuck... www.youtube.com/watch?v=e77BakjRrdU

There aren't any new bands along the lines of Blood, Sweat and Tears, Lighthouse, Chicago, Tower of Power and Ides of March. Loved their classic, "Vehicle." www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxJFjO4Skgo What led to the death of bands like these? Changing tastes in music over the years?
