On the PP, it's too bad that we have to force McAvoy into PP1 even though it's not really the strength of his game. Remember that Torey Krug guy? Remember when he and Gryz both came up for contracts and everybody said don't pay Krug $6M because we have Gryz for $4M? Bad decision. Gryz plateaued ever since then and did nothing but prove that he is NOT capable of running a PP or filling Krug's shoes offensively. Gryz has been worked over in the post-season pretty much every year since, doesn't bring leadership, and in general is a point of frustration for us fans year after year.
Hindsight is 20/20, I know, but looking back it's hard not to think that they should have signed Krug, dealt Gryz and made the numbers work. People underestimate the importance of a good PP QB. It literally is what makes it work. Someone on the PP needs to be the one initiate the plays, get the PK moving, decide when to shoot vs. when to pass and Krug was VERY good at doing just that. It feels like this year's group just doesn't have that natural distributor that is able to consistently and confidently read what the PK is giving them and make the right plays. Too many guys who hold the puck way too long. Too many risky passes that don't even create high danger chances, even when they work out, and team's learned to key in on Pasta's one timer. I was a huge Krug fan and don't think they should have let him go. He was a leader. He was a gamer. And while not the perfect defenseman, he was elite at a very important part of the game. At the time we wanted to bitch about giving him an extra 500K-$1M more than most thought he was worth, but in the grand scheme of things that amount of money is really just pocket change that Sweeney ends up spending on depth pieces that all of us hope to never see in the line-up.
Shatty is definitely a better PP option than McAvoy but he's definitely a liability defensively which is why he keeps getting put on the 9th floor. The make-up of our team this year is defense first, and that means coach doesn't risk giving up bad goals in exchange for offense because outside of Pasta we don't have the game-breaking offense of last year. I get the decision.
Let's hope Low-Rider can continue to develop into the future PP1 QB and take some weight off of McAvoy's shoulders. I really just don't think it comes naturally to McAvoy and seems to me like he is starting to grip his stick and overthink it at this point.

I get frustrated when we keep trying to carry the puck in, after getting stopped multiple times in a row. the neutral zone back pass is used waaay to often imo. just means you've decided having to beat everyone is better than beating 3. I think it should be the plan about 30 % of the time, with a lob into the hash marks, and a hard shot into the zone taking up the other 2. McAvoy is the second most skilled player on the team. odd man situations are tailer made for players like him. I think the "plan" is interferring with that. change up the plan a bit imo.

CMac is an elite scoring defenseman, and far better than Krug for your PP. Torey did peak at 30 PPP one year with the Bruins, 9 points better than Charlie's 21 two years ago. The Bruins PP was also a bit better then, topping 25% vs 21% this year. But the Bruins also were 2nd in the league in shorties against with 14, which was a big part of Krug's dismal +/- ratings while he was in his prime with the Bruins. 4 seasons, 200 points, -60 and not a single positive season. With Charlie as the main man on the PP the Bruins have allowed just 7, 7 and now 5 shorties this season. Essentially the Bruins have lost 5-10 PP goals per season with the change, but have also cut off 5-10 shorties as well. This is largely due to the high-risk/reward nature of Krug's game. I personally hated it. He was notorious for the big slapper that would miss wide, wrap around and lead to an odd man rush and goal. Charlie is far more methodical, and you almost never see that play out of him. He gets you points without costing you.

I do see a big problem with the PP though, and it started about a month ago when they started benching JVR. Dude was awesome all year on the PP. Then they started using both Zacha and Coyle on one PP. That sucked. Now they've got JDB as the net front guy and he's OK, but no JVR. The Dyke Reemer has literally made a career out of being a net front guy and he's still good at it. He should play every game, and be on every PP1. Lauko brings nothing to the team. Sure he's enthusiastic and hits, but he's too small to bother anyone and scores once every solar eclipse. Get Jimmy in and use him.

It's great if he can make it back even if it's for more depth, a 3rd pairing of Peake and Forbort could be good.

I don't know how you can watch the two play and then try to say that McAvoy's better as a power play quarterback than Krug. There's five guys on the ice so comparing individual stats to me is invalid. Mcvoy has a habit of shooting into the goalies chest when he has golden opportunities. He's getting better at that this year actually, but I don't think again that it comes naturally to him. The bigger responsibility is adjusting the way you attack as the other teams PK takes away certain options. Krug was very good at that. I look at our power play right now and I see a bunch of guys who just don't really know what to do. Too much wrapping it around the boards. Too many cute passes that again don't lead to good chances. Nobody is really in control of the power play. Everybody got too used to seeing pasta tea up slapshots but then we lost our bumper. Zacha is the opposite hand of bergie and so our old patterns don't apply anymore. Mcavoy is elite at a lot of things, running a power plate isn't one of them.

A lot of different skills go into being a good hockey player that lend to different situations. Mcavoy is an absolute rock defensively and is one of the best in the league at skating the puck up ice and generally not getting it taken away from him. His vision is good but not great. His shot is also good but not great. His overall level of creativity is probably about average offensively. All those skills still add up to a top 10 d-man in the league, some might say top five. Still doesn't make him an ideal power play. Quarterback as evidenced by our putrid power play of the last half of the season

He always should have been a third-paring defenseman with heavy power play and come from behind responsibilities. Pasta is a high risk high reward player as well. It's all about how you use the talent on your team.

He always should have been a third-paring defenseman with heavy power play and come from behind responsibilities. Pasta is a high risk high reward player as well. It's all about how you use the talent on your team. Pasta's not high risk. Good defensively, leads team in takeaways, always a massive + player. Pasta is definitely high risk lol. He's just that good offensively that he's going to score you more goals than he will cost. This coming from a huge Pasta fan that has taken up for him constantly as some members decided he was too lazy/bad defensively. Marchand is too. They both produce more than they cost you. That doesn't mean both won't try to dangle someone at the most in opportune time and have it go the other way on them. I put Krug in that camp, but obviously not as good as to end up a highly positive player. Let's remember though. Krug played, one could say was forced into, a LOT of top 4 minutes because of a lack of depth. This is the pre-lindholm days. Krug played a lot of time on the second pairing not because he was that good defensively (he wasn't), but because he was better there than Gryz, McQuaid, Kevan Miller, Colin Miller, Kampfer, etc. I'm not, and never argued that Krug is a top 4 defenseman that makes us better. I just argued that we should have found a way to keep Krug and sent Gryz packing around that time. Krug's talent on the offensive side of the puck is/was legit. He definitely made our PP better able to adapt when the other team took away our preferred looks. He's without was at that time without a doubt better at running the point on the PP than McAvoy is for us now. Of course though, Bruins powerplay somehow flipped a switch in the playoffs and goes 40% against Toronto so go figure. Fuck it, I'll take it. Thank god Debrusk decided to show up. Go b's. And for the record. I'm a huge McAvoy fan. I think it's amazing how easy he makes it look to go end to end with the puck and how rarely anybody strips him. I just see a lot of times when he hesitates that extra half second before moving the puck on the PP and in general he's indecisive on when to shoot the puck. Marchand used to do that too much as well. I remember when he first started to get PP time being super frustrated watching him try to dangle or skate around 1-on-1 during a PP. Then he developed a bit of a one timer from down low and really great chemistry with Pasta and Bergy on the PP and went from there. I'd love it if McAvoy develops that was as well. He's got the talent that's for sure. Again, just to me, it's never seemed like he has that natural scoring ability that some others in the NHL have.
