April will be here before you know it and it's never too early to start talking about playoff hockey. Last year sucked once the playoffs rolled around as we all know. So what about this year? Can the Bruins get past the first round? What teams made the best moves at the trade deadline and are playoff ready? Let's get the conversation started!

DS did almost nothing to improve the team at the deadline. The biggest asset this team has is goaltending. They got the best tandem in the league... USE THEM! They will need carry this team if they are going to win any rounds.
Lots of lessons to be had from last year. I expected a lot from last years "powerhouse" and they choked. I don't expect much from this year's team because they seem to be built like the opposite of the 2011 team, so we'll see what happens.
NO FUCKING PASSENGERS!

"Are you kidding me?!? Playoffs?"
Just happy it's going to happen. You look at a team like the Pens who have Karlson, Sid, Geno, Letang, Rust, Smith, had Guentzel, etc... and they are totally dysfunctional with seemingly no immediate solutions except tear down. Making it to the dance is a big feat and should not be taken for granted. I am also happy that the Bruins won't have the massive weight of historic expectations that was on top of them last year. All I can hope for is a new John Druce to emerge on the Bs, puck luck, staying healthy, great goaltending, playing 5-on-5, and winning OT games.

They're used to this in the regular season they Monty should continue doing it in the playoffs. Last year he fucked up and played an injured Ullmark. Use what you got.

I think that weight was the biggest reason they didn't get past Florida. Florida didn't have a care in the world they were expected to lose. This year the Bruins probably won't win the Presidents trophy so we'll see how they respond.

The Islanders have quietly snuck into the final WC spot and are 2 pts back of the Flyers for 3rd in the Metro with 2 games in hand. The Dead Things are on a 5 game regulation loss streak and have fallen out of the playoff picture for now, will get interesting in the final 5 weeks for sure.

Things are getting stressful in Detroit where a 6 game regulation losing streak has put their playoff chase in jeopardy. It has gotten so tight that Raymond got a burr under his saddle from Cherryrot's rough handling of him in practice, maybe a game against the Yotes will alleviate the pressure. I'm not sure though as Arizona neat the Dead Things about a week ago.

Detroit loses to the Yotes, make that 7 in a row reg losses now. The good thing for them is the Isles lost as well. The Bolts beat the Rags to hold onto the 1st WC and the Flyers are getting stomped by TO, so their hold on 3rd in the Metro is still tenuous. The Caps oddly enough are still within striking distance only 3 pts back of the last WC even with them losing more than they win because of the ineptitude of mostly Detroit but also the Isles. In the Isles defence though they were a ways back and then went on a winning streak, gonna be a fun final month.

With the B's victory they close to within 1 pt of the Panthers who lost to the Canes. If the B's can keep with them in the standings then it will come down to their two remaining head to heads.

I took a further look at this WC chase and just noticed that the Sabres are now only 3 pts back of the last WC spot, wow how things can change. For that matter the Devils are only 4 pts back and the Pingu only 5 pts. even with both teams losing more than they win, crazy. The head to heads are really important now going down the stretch, the Sabres at Detroit on Saturday.

If they do, and find themselves facing shitty-cats, I'd like that. Florida is heading towards winning the overrated trophy and the jinx that goes with it so I could see the Islanders upsetting them if they played them. Finishing the Regular Season in 1st place is NOT overrated. That is just recency bias. I remember that someone on here had posted the regular season positions of all the Stanley Cup winners since 1985-86 (President's Cup inaugural season) and found that there were more Cup winners finishing in 1st place than finished in any other position (2nd to 16th). I don't have time to check for that post at this time, but I always thought there was a huge advantage having home ice advantage throughout the playoffs...regardless of what people perceive as a President's Trophy curse. So I asked Copilot - the new MS Bing AI Search Engine - what it knows about the subject. I entered the phrase Regular season position for Stanley Cup winners and waited...for about 10 seconds. Here is what it said after going back beyond 1985-86(a larger sample size): " 2. Expansion Era and Beyond:
- Since the expansion era, regular season standings have played a crucial role in determining the Cup winner.
- Here’s a glimpse of how Stanley Cup champions fared in the regular season:
- First Place: Teams finishing in first place during the regular season have an impressive track record. They have won the Cup a whopping 43% of the time.
- Second Place: Second-place teams have also clinched the Cup, albeit less frequently, with a 11.8% success rate.
- Other Placements: Teams in other positions (ranging from 3rd to 16th) have also claimed the Cup, but the top two spots dominate historically."
I guess the bottom line (for me) regarding positioning in the regular season is that every team should strive to get as high in the standings as possible because home ice advantage is apparently a big factor whether you drink from Lord Stanley's mug in June. I will continue to cheer for the Bruins to overtake the Cats and any team that gets in their way between now and game 82.
Copilot also offered up this little tidbit regarding power play efficiency and SC winners:
"3. Recent Trends:
- Each of the last five Stanley Cup champions had a top-10 power play during the regular season, with four of those five ranking among the top five of the sixteen playoff teams in the ensuing postseason run."
The Bruins currently sit 9th with the PP.

I remember that post that mentioned teams coming in first won more Cups. Is first place winning their division or winning the Presidents trophy?

Is there any other single position finish that won more than 21.6% during that time? Detroit is the only team to win the Cup twice while also winning the PT in the same year...not too shabby.

If they do, and find themselves facing shitty-cats, I'd like that. Although I hate the Cheshire Cats, I’ll be rooting for them to meet the B’S…. You know what they say, if you wanna be the best, then you need to…. And what better way to get revenge than doing it yourself…. True. But that’s getting greedy. And maybe the aisles just soften ‘em up enough for the Bs.

Yeah, but it doesn't work that way...you can only start the playoffs from one regular season position - not any of them. So you have to ask yourself, "If a team could hand pick the one position to start a SC run, where is statistically the best place to start?" The answer (historically) is 1st place overall.
