And Carl Crawford is DFA'ed by LA today, eating $35million gifted to them by the Red Sox. Has there been a worse Boston FA signing, ever? You mean worst trade ever. The Dodgers were dumb enough to take Beckett, Crawford and Gonzalez. Thank you Ben Cherington for getting the Sox out of those horrible signings! I'm trying to go off of memory here, but I think Lucchino brokered this deal, or at least was the head man on it. Dodgers wanted Gonzalez so bad, to appeal to their hispanic fanbase they were willing to take Crawford, Beckett and Punto. Havent heard much from those grade a prospects the Sox got in return. Webster, De LaRosa were supposed to be good pitchers, Sands was supposed to be a power bat. Oh well, addition by subtraction. Forgotten man in all of this was Loney.

The trade was about money that the Sox wanted out so they could reshape the team for 2013.
I think the return was insignificant in what Boston wanted to do with the cash they then had to work with.

Huge potential from Groome. Good pick. I wish the Angels drafted as well. They've drafted poorly since Trout.

Didn't overpay. I will take a lefty for the pen.

Didn't overpay. I will take a lefty for the pen. The trouble with having prospects like Moncada and Benintendi is everyone wants them. Every conversation for a good player is going to start with them. I was afraid Dombrowski would deal one for Sale, even after getting Pomeranz.
Rumors are the White Sox wanted Pomeranz, Rodriguez and Benintendi. No way theyre trading Moncada, they have 60 plus million invested in him.

Benetendi called up today, guess we'll see what the kids got. Kid looks like he's 12 yrs old. Price cruising along….until the 8th, did the same thing with the Jays last yr, pitching lights out and then has one bad late inning and blows it. He's been pitching well though.

That's on the manager and pitching coach. It's a Grady, just not as obvious or horrifying. Price isn't a guy I let "work through it" after the 5th. Maybe after the 3rd.... it's a tricky thing though, because he's rarely pitching against someone lower in the order, meaning he also doesn't have a cushion to work with. Games gonna be close. And in the end, you also count on that guy to give you a quality start and then some - keep the pen fresh to backstop the rest of the rotation. So...maybe in the regular season, you live with the 7th and 8th inning tire fires on occasion because he's still going to win more than he loses even against other aces. In games that matter, post-season games, no - get the hook ready.

Yeah, especially when the worst part of the story is that you used the pen just as much as if you'd pulled Price to start the 8th (though I agree - you don't shut him down when he's got a 3 hit shutout going). Given the trend with Price, though? Once the first batter of the 8th goes yard, you better have someone warming up, because if that next guy gets a hit? It means Price has fallen into that twilight zone where he goes from unhittable to NAIA hittable.

Price does not have the heat he had a few years back. He needs to be watched, his salary is the kicker for most NE fans. I listened to WEEI today and Merloni nailed the rationale. A three hit shutout should be 9 innings not 7. That said 4 pitches in the 8th and gonzo. The team needs a leader on the mound.

Nobody complaining about that contract these days.

Cherington was right about Porcello. He got hammered here after signing him to that extension without him throwing one pitch in a Sox uniform. Porcello is what he's always been. An innings eating reliable #2.
When Price and Porcello go into Seattle and pitch 2 games like that and you can't win, tells me you aren't going go far. Their offense is good but they beat up on teams 4 and 5 starters, especially at home. That changes come crunch time.

Cherington was right about Porcello. Cherington can renew his visiting professorship in sports management at Columbia U. now.

Its not looking good for the Sox. Maybe they can stay in the running for the WC, but its gonna be tough. Farrell's job could depend on it.

Personally, I don't think any team in the American League East has any chance of winning the World Series.
